Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
4DAVID T. LYON, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
lMwPROVED BUTTER-DISH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 69,824, dated October 15, 1867.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID T. LYON, of West Meriden ,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Butter-Dishes; and Ido hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a front view 5 and in Fig. 2 a side view, showing the section through the joint on line ze at'.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of butter-dishes known as the revolving cover;7 and consists in the peculiar construction ofthe pivots or joints upon which the cover hinges, whereby the usual pins or fastening are avoided.
In order to the clear understandin g of my invention, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the bowl; B, the cover, supported in bearings C and so as to be turned by knobs D in the said bearings to open or close the cover in the usual manner.
The bearing, which is the peculiarity of the invention, is formed by attaching a cylinder, et, upon the bowl, upon opposite sides, as denoted in black, Fig. 2, the said cylinder having a slot, d, formed in its surface, and opening atan angle of about forty-five degrees from the center, as seen in Fig. 2. To the cover the knobs are attached, and the bearing between the knob and the cover is formed to enter the said slot, as denoted in blue, Fig. 2. A tumbler, f, is placed within the cylinder a, and so as to revolve freely therein, and as denoted in yellow in Fig. 2, and has upon one sidea slot cut corresponding to the slot d in the cylinder, so that the bearing or part of the knol).
connection will set into the said tumbler, as denoted in Fig. 2, and when so set the cover may be freely turned, but can only be removed from its bearing when in the position denoted in Fig. 2, or when the groove in the tumbler corresponds in position to the groove in the cylinder, and in that position it is lifted from its bearing and easily removed, and thus dispensing with all detachable parts or pieces, and forming a strong and durable joint for the dish. I prefer to employ the tumbler, yet it may be dispensed with by making the connection between the knob und the cover of: the saine width as the diameter of the cylinder and inserting it through the slot in the same manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bearings ot' a revolving dish-cover, constructed in the manner described and so as to be att-ached or detached, as specified-that is to say, the slotted cylinder c upon each side of the dish, combined. with a bearing tixed to the cover, either with or without the tumblerf.
DAVID T. LYON.
