BLACKBOARD.
SPEUIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,204, dated April 22, 1902. -v
Application led January 29, 1900. Serial No. 31254. (No model.) v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, OTTO LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamesburg, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Blackboard and Chalk-Holder for Game Apparatus, of which the 'following is a specification.
The invention relates to a blackboard and chalk-'holder for game apparatus.y
lo The object of the present invention is to provide a blackboard and chalk-holder designed especially for use in game apparatus and adapted to be applied to a hinged lid or cover for the same, so that when the lid or cover is closed the blackboard and chalkholder will be concealed and when the lid or cover is open the blackboard and chalk-holder will be in convenient position for use for marking the score of the game.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and`Y arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended. z5 In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chalk-holder and blackboard constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a game apparatus, the lid or cover being open. Fig, 2 is-a vertical longitudinal sectional view, the lid or cover being closed.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.
l designates a rectangular frame provided at each corner with a supporting-leg 2 and having a false bottom 3, arranged in the same horizontal plane or thereabout as the lower edges of the side and end boards which com- 4o pose the rectangular frame 1. The compartment thus formed may be of any desired depth and is designed to contain the game to be played. The table formed by the rectangular frame and the legsis provided with a lid or cover 15, hinged to the rear end board of the rectangular frame l and coated upon its inner or lower face with a preparation or simply painted black, which will adapt it to serve as a blackboard, upon which the score may be kept with the aid of a piece of chalk. 5d
Extending transversely of the top 15 and secured to the lower or inner surface thereof and near its lower end when thrown back, as indicated in Fig. 1, is a cleat 16, whichis provided with a groove 17, forming'a receptacle 5 5 for a stick of chalk. The groove 17 of the cleat is formed in the face of the same, which is uppermost when the cover is erect, and the said groove is broadened within the strip to form an overhanging portion at the front side 0f the groove to retain the chalk therein when the coveris closed. The cleatis of such shape in cross-section that it will retain the stick of chalk in the groove, whether the top of the table be in an open or closed position, as will be readily apparent from an inspection of the figures of the drawings, When the top or lid is closed or folded down, the device has the appearance of and is adapted to be used as an ordinary household table; 7o
What is claimed is- The combination of a hinged lid or cover having its under side treated to form a blackboard, and a chalk-holding cleat fixed to the under side of the cover or lid and having a groove in its face which is uppermost when the cover is erect, said groove being broad-A ened within the cleat to form an overhanging portion at the front of the groove to retain the chalk in the groove when the cover is closed, substantially as described. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
