The object of the present invention is to improved construction of the watch-pocket which will obtain the ends here inbefore recited. K l

The improved safety-pocket may be em ployed singly on or embodied in the construction of garments; but it is preferable for various reasons to combine the safety-pocket with an ordinary or outside pocket which is adapted to contain a handkerchief or' any other article. My improved safety-pocket may be usedon any and all kinds of garments, although it is especially designed for useon outing or ath-' letic garments, such as on tennis-shirts and The safety-pocket may also be em-' ployed on mens shirts, womens shirt-waists, cowboys trousers, m'ens working jackets, overalls, or jumpers, and, in fact, on any and all garments wherein it is desirable to provide means for carrying watches with safety and reliability against accidental falling out; To the accomplishment of these ends my inventionconsists of a safety-pocket'closed on its top and bottom'and partly closed on both sides, said pocket having on its inner side edge a small opening for the reception or passage of a watch chain or guard and on its outer side edge a larger opening adapted to permit the passage of a watch in inserting, or removing the latter into or from the pocket.

5 designates the garment, which may be of any character or material adapted for any of the uses hereinbeforementioned.

6 designates the safety-pocket, the same consisting, preferably, of a layer of material of the proper kind, size, and shape, which is applied to the garment 5 in any usual or preferred way. This safety-pocket 6 is necessarily closed along its top edge by stitches, which extend entirely across the pocket or by suitable fasteners, as indicated at 7. The pocket 6 is furthermore closed entirely across its bottom edge, as at 8, the inner edge of the pocket is closed nearly throughout its length, as at 9, and the outer edge of said pocket is also closed for a suitable distance, as indicated at 10. The safety-pocket is provided with two openings only, (indicated on Fig. 1 by the numerals 11 12,) the 1ast-named opening 12 being also shown by Fig. 2. The opening 11 is at the inner edge 9 of the safetypocket, and it lies at the upper corner thereof, said opening 11 being formed by terminating the stitches which close the edge 9 near the closed top edge 70f the pocket, asindicated at the point 13, thereby forming a small opening 11 on the inner edge of the pocket,which opening is adapted to permit of the passage of a watch chain or guard. The opening 12 is necessarily provided at the outer edge of the pocket and at the upper portion thereof, and said opening 12 is formed by stopping the stitches which close the outer edge 10 of the safetypocket at a point some distance below the closed top edge f the safety-pocket, as indicated at 14 in Figs. 1 and 2. The opening 12 in the outer edge of the pocket is considerably larger than the opening 11 in the inner edge of the pocket, and this opening 12 is of such size as to permit a watch to be readily passed through the same in the operation of introducing or withdrawing the watch by hand into or from the pocket 6.

In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the safety-pocket 6 is associated or combined with an outside pocket 15, which is adapted to contain a handkerchief or any other article. This outside pocket 15 is composed of a layer of suitable material, which is arranged over the pocket 6 and which is stitched or fastened therewith to the garment-that is to say, the outside pocket is united alongits bottom and two side edges to the garment except at the points where the openings 11 12 are formed in the safety-pocket, and also except along the top edge of the outside pocket, which top edge is left open, as indicated at 16 in Fig. 3. The two pockets may be reinforced at their upper corners by the employment of rivets, as 17, and also by a rivet applied to said edge at the point 14, (see Fig. 1;) but of course the rivets may be dispensed with or the mechanical equivalents of the rivets may be employed.

The pockets shown by Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are similar to thepockets 6 15, which are shown by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, except that the shape of the pockets is varied somewhat and that the outside pocket may be provided with a flap or reinforcement 18.

In the embodiment of the invention shown by Figs. 7 and 8 the outside pocket 15 is in the form of an ordinary pocket, which is cut away at its upper corner to provide the recess 19, and this outside pocket is reinforced at its union with the garment by the employment of the rivets 20, the same lying at the terminals of the recessed portion 19. The inside or safety pocket 6 is partly exposed through the recessed portion 19 of the outside pocket, and provision is thus made for the hand to obtain ready access to the watchopening 12 of the safety-pocket. The safetypocket is provided at its inner edge with the chain or guard opening 11, which is located a suitable distance below the rivet 20. In this style of garment the safety-pocket 6 is preferably located well toward the inner edge of the outside pocket 15, and said safetypocket is of smaller size or area than the outside pocket, as clearly indicated by dotted lines, whereas in the form of safety-pocket shown by Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, and by Figs. & to 6, inclusive, the safety-pocket is repre sented as being of the same size as the outside pocket 15.

In the style of pocket shown by Figs. 9 and 10 the main pocket 15 lies within the garment 5, which is cut away below the waistband, as indicated at 21, thus providing a hand-opening in the garment itself, and said garment is reinforced at the ends of the cutaway portion by the rivets 22 or theireqniva lents. The safety-pocket is smaller in essential respects than the corresponding pockets shown by the preceding figures of the drawings and heretofore described; but the safetypocket in this embodiment of the invention is arranged at about the middle of the main pocket 15 and at its upper portion is exposed through the cut-out part 21 of the trousers; otherwise the safety-pocket G is identical in construction to the improvement which forms the subject-matter of this invention.

By the term inner edge of the safetypocket I mean that edge which lies next to the center of the garment.

I am aware that it has been proposed to provide a safety-pocket within another pocket, the former having a small opening for the passage of the watch-chain and a larger opening at the opposite side of the pocket for the insertion and removal of the watch; but in all prior constructions of this nature the larger opening has been on the side nearest the center of the garment-that is, just the reverse from that herein shown-the result being that when the wearer stoops or-bends over or downward there is nothing to prevent the watch from passing through this opening and lost. By my disposition of the large and IOD small openings I entirely overcome this objection, and as the wearer stoops or bends downward the natural tendency of the watch I is to move to the side of the pocket farthest from the larger or watch-receiving opening. The gist of my invention therefore resides in this disposition of the said opening, and great importance is attached thereto.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- A safety watch-pocket closed at its top and bottom and partly closed on both side edges thereof, said pocket provided on its inner edge with a small opening adapted for the R. O. WILKINS.
