CLOSURE FOR POCKE'IS.

To all whom) it may concern:

.Be it known. that I, JAMEs'H. CLARK, a .citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Pockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,

.clear, and exact description of the invention,-

one member of the pocket and provided with a button hole for attachment to a button secured to the other member of the pocket near the top, the said flap being stiffened by a reinforcement near its free end and of a length sufficient to form a shallow pocket within the main pocket when attached at its free end to said button.

It further consists in a flap or false pocket, the latter adapted to be closed by passing the button which holds the free end of the 'flap in place, through a button hole in the member of the pocket to which the flap is permanently secured. Inthe accompanying drawings; Figure 1 80 is a view in perspective of a part of a garment having a pocket therein the view being taken through the pocket; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the flap in position and forming a false pocket; Fig. 3'is a similar view showing the false pocket closed at its top; Fig. 4 is a view of the flap detached, and Fig. 5 is a view; showing the relative po-' sitions of the button holes.

6 represents a part of a garment, and for 0 the purpose of illustration only, will refer to it as an overcoat. 7 is the lining and 8 an ins de pocket attached to the garment and lining in the usual manner. 9 is a flap made of any suitable flexible material, preferably 46 as wide as the pocket and secured at one edge to the lining adjacent the month or openin of the pocket, by stitching or otherwise. Ihe opposite or free end 10 of the flap is provided with a stifi'ening strip 11 extending throughout the width of the flap for holdingthe said edge against the inner face of the garment 6 and for prevent-mg the ends of tine flap from sagging when the free end'of the flap is buttoned. when fl flap is buttoned thereto as shown in Fig. 2, it forms a false, shallow pocket within the main pocket and prevents entry into the main pocket while it is in its closed or normal position. i i

' To further secure the main pocket against entry, I provide a button hole 14 in. the member of the pocket to which the flap is secured and in line with the button 13 so that by first attaching the free end of the flap to the button and then passing the button through the button hole 14, in the opposite side of the pocket the latter will be secured against entry except by the-release of the flap, and by making button hole it at right angles or at an angle to the button hole in the free end of the flap, it will be impossible to release the flap by a straight or a single pull on the upper end ofthe lining. It will require one action of the hand to dis engage the button from lining T and another to disengage the free end of the flap from the button. which could hardly be done without discovery. Even if the garment were hanging up, coi'isiderable time would necessarily be consumed in discovering the way to get into the pocket, thus minimizing the danger of loss when the garment is not in use. If the flap should be freed and pushed down it would cover the contents of the pocketand in this way assist in foiling attempts to pick the pocket.

While I have described the in'iprovement as applied to pockets of garments, it is evident that it would be equally applicable to pocket books, hand bags, etc.

' Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. The combination of a pocket, a flexible flap secured at one end to one edge of the pocket within the latter, and provided at. its other edge with a stiffening strip and a button hole, and a button securecLto the opposite edge of the pocket and adapted to be entered in the button hole in the flap and support the latter in looped position within the pocket.
