and useful Improvements in File and Display Books, of which the following is a specification. l

The several features of my invention and the various advantages resulting from their use, conjointly or otherwise, will be apparent from the following description andclaims.

In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure lis a view of the side of the blank or foundation-piece which receives the hinge-flap of the leaf. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the leaves in readiness to be attached to the foundation-piece. Fig. 3 affords a view in perspective of a series of leaves connected to the foundation-piece, only a part of the latter being shown. Fig. 4 illustrates a completed book made according to my invention. Fig. 5 illustrates the mode in which the hinge of the leaf is connected to the foundation piece. shown and a portion of the foundation-piece,

- the same being sufficient to indicate such mode of connection. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the parts forming a leaf and of the hinge-leaf which is secured thereto. The preferred mode of construction of the leaf and the preferred location of the hinge-leaf in relation to such leaf is herein shown.

I first provide the ordinaryfbook-covers A A and unite them by a suitable back B in any suitable manner. l I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail.

I provide a strong flexible piece of cardboard (or other suitable material) C, preferably not exceeding the size in length and breadth of one of the covers A, and in this cardboard I make parallel'slits G2 C2.. I make as many slits as there are leaves to be ate tached to this side of the book. This piece C I term the foundation-piece.7 I now provide leaves D. ferred manner of their joint construction is as follows: I provide two coextensive pieces of cardboard D2 D2 and an end hinge-piece E. I place one long edge part of the latter between the two cardboards D2 D2. I stick or otherwise suitably unite the pieces D2 D2 and the leaf hinge-piece E together. The pieces D2D2thusunited formastrongstileaflland this leaf D is now duly provided at its rear edge with the leaf-hinge E. The requisite number of such leaves D, respectively provided with hinge-leaves E, are made. Each hinge- 'leaf E is n-ow passed through a slit C2 of the foundation-piece, one slit to one leaf, and that part of the leaf which projects behind the foundation-piece C (see the hinge-leaf at thelefthand, Fig. 5) is duly gummed or pasted over, or those parts of the foundation-piece C upon which they are respectively to rest are suitably gummed' or pasted over. The rear projecting part of this hinge-leaf is now folded down ilat upon the foundation-piece, as shown in the right hinge-leaf, Fig. 5, and sticks there in position. Thus all of the rear projecting parts of the hin ge-leaves E are duly gummed iiat upon the rear side of the foundation-piece C. The rear side of the foundation-piece is now duly united to the inner side of a cover A, preferably by gum or paste. So, also, a like foundation-piece duly connected in like manner to similar hinged leaves carrying display-leaves is preferably present, attached to and forming a part of the other cover A. The display-leaves D are now in place and can be utilized for various purposes. In order that these leaves may be adapted to receive and hold display-leaves or file-papers and also permit these displayleaves or file-papers to be detached, I provide these leaves with suitable devices detachable or otherwise for such purpose.` In the drawings I have shown a very convenient means--V namely, the corner caps or hoods D2, one such cap or hood DB at each corner of a leaf D. These caps are preferably secured at their inner edge to the adjacent edge ofthe leaf D;

The advantages of my invention are many. Among the more prominent are as follows: The file is very simple of construction. Itis very economical of manufacture and can be rapidly made. The hinge-leaf connection is exceedingly iiexible and is not subject to strain. The leaves D of each cover lie upon each other when the book is open, so that each leaf extends out beyond the leaf next above. This arrangement enables the leaves to be rapidly grasped and turned. Furthermore, that edge K of each leaf which extends out beyond the one next to it is adapted to carry and display an index number or letter or sign or word which shall inform the one using the book of the contents of the said leaf. Of course the outer surfaces or sides of the leaves D may receive printing, writing, or marking of any kind.

lVhat I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination of a book-cover, leaves separate therefrom, a foundation-piece as C distinct from the leaves and the cover and having slits C2, said leaves each having a hingeleaf E, said hinge-leaf being passed through the adjacent slit and bent and secured Hat upon the back of the foundation-piece, substantially as and for the purposes speciiied.

2. The combination of a book-cover, a foundation-piece C, having slits C2, leaves D and a hinge-leaf E, each leaf D being composed of two pieces D2, D2, the edge of the hinge-leaf E being located between the pieces D2, D2, the latter and the hinge-leaf E being united together, the hinge-leaf passing through the adjacent slit C2 and secured at the back of the foundation-piece C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. The combination of abook-cover, afoundation-piece C, having slits C2, leaves D, and a hinge-leaf E, the latter secured to the leaf D, and passed through the adjacent slit, and bent and secured to the back of the foundation-piece, and means for enabling display or other cards to be held to the side of the leaf D, substantially as and for the purposes specied.

4. The combination of a book-cover, a foundation-piece C, having slits C2, leaves D, and a hinge-leaf E, the latter secured to the leaf D, and passed through the adjacent slit, and bent and secured to the back of this foundation-piece, and the corners D3 on the leaves D, arranged to adapt theleaves to receive the separate file or display papers, and the like, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

5. The combination of abook-cover, a foundation-piece C, having slits C2, leaves D each composed of at least two subpieces D2, laid side by side, a hinge-leaf E, having one edge held between the subpieces D2, and the other edge passed through the slit and bent and secured at against the back of the foundationpiece, and the corners D3, united to the edge of the leaf D, but separate elsewhere therefrom, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

6. The combination of a book-cover, a foundation-piece C, having slits C2, leaves D and a hinge-leaf E, each leaf D being composed of two pieces D2, D2, the edge ot' the hingeleaf E being located between the pieces D2, D2, the latter and the hinge -leaf E being united together, the hinge leaf passing through the adjacent slit C2 and secured at the back of the fou ndation-piece C, the leaves D being of the same size, and when down presenting a broad outer edge, on which index or other characters may be, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
