WITNESSES IN VE N TOR MW 9. M k4 7/ lyi UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' WILLIAM BAUMAN, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
BUCKLE-CHAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent NO. 697,433, dated April 15, 1902. Application filed September 3, 1901. Serial No. 74,094. (No model.)
T0 0. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM BAUMAN,a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident ofthe city of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckle-Chafes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buckle-chafes and the object of myimprovement is to adapt the spring-bar or stiffener contained Within a rein to lock said plate to the rein by passing said bar through a loop on said chafe-plate, the loop having first been inserted into an opening in the rein. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle with its attached chafe-plate. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the under side of said buckle and chafe-plate. Fig. 3 is a plan view of said buckle and chafe-plate, showing them connected to and in use as a fastener for a rein. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the buckle and chafe-plate as in place and fastened to the rein by the spring-bar, part of the rein being sectioned on the line a: 00; and Fig. 5 is aview of a portion of the upper surface of the rein.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The buckle d is arranged to pivot within the loop 0. of a chafe-plate a. A loop 0 is passed through the loop a and serves as a means for retaining the end of the strap 9. The under side of the chafe-plate is furnished with a loop I) b, which may, if desired, be constructed in one piece instead of being divided, as shown. The end of the rein is composed of two straps laid face to face and sewed together at the edges, the ends of both being doubled over and the strap g being a part of and a continuation of the strap h, but being of a lesser width. The other end of the strap h is continued but a short distance along the strap f beyond the buckle d. A spring-bar or stifiener e is shown in position in Fig. 4: and is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. A
slot 70 is cut through the strap f in a proper place for the location of the buckle d.
In order to fasten the chafe-plate a to the rein before the stiffening-bar ehas been passed between the straps f and h, the loop 2) b of said chafe-plate is inserted into the slot is. The spring or stiifening bar e is then slipped between the straps f and h, through the space left open at the end of the strap h for that purpose, and is passed along lengthwise of the straps until it reaches and is passed through the loop I) b. Its engagement with the inner surfaces of said loop holds the chafe-plate 0/ firmly in juxtaposition with the outer surface of the strap f, and as there is no possibility of movement of the said springbar e the buckle d is permanently fixed in place.
This device for fastening buckles to reins While being of an inexpensive construction is especially economical in use on account of the saving of labor in making the attachment.
It is of course obvious that this improved fastener may be also used or applied to any other portion of a rein or to any other surface Where a similar locking means can be made effective.
Having described my invention, what I.
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A buckle-fastener, composed of a chafeplate having a loop, in combination with a springbar adapted to enter and engage said loop, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A buckle-fastener for reins, composed of a rein having a slot, a chafe-plate having a loop adapted to be inserted in said slot, and a spring-bar adapted to be inserted within said rein and through the loop of said chafeplate, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A buckle-fastener for reins, composed of a rein having a slot, a chafe-plate having a loop adapted to be inserted within said slot, and having a buckle-bearing, a buckle pivoted within said bearing, and a spring-bar adapted to pass within and engage the inner portion of said loop after the loop has been inserted within the slot in said rein, as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 22d day of August, 1901.
WILLIAM BAUMAN.
