Be it known that I, ADAM (J. HENDRICKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, in thecounty of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of
. which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sashfasteners.
It is the object of my invention to provide an improved fastening device carried by the movable window-sash and operating, in conjunction with a stationary vertical rod. secured'to the window-frame, to lock the window in any desired adjusted position.
To this end the invention resides in the features of construction and combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand the invention, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of a-window sash and frame, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the fastener applied to the upper frame with the cap-plate removed and showing a portion of a rod cotiperating with the fastener. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of .the several parts of the device shown in Fig.2 separated. and a portion of a rod codperating with the fastener. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the fastener for the lower sash. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the.le vers of the lower locking device. -Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the rollers, andFig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 7 7 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the window-frame, 2 the movable upper sash, and 3 the lower sashall constructed ina usual and well-known manner.

8 indicates a casing, preferably rectangular in shape, and secured to the upper end of one side of the upper window-sash 2 in any suitable manner, as by screws 9. The casing comprises a flat metallic plate having formed on its inner side, near its upper and lower ends,
transverse flanges l0 and 11, the upper flange All the parts of the casing above referred to are preferably cast in a single integral metallic casting.- -The flanges 10 and 11 have slots 18, formed therein',through which loosely passes the rod 5. Disposed transversely in the casing is an oscillatory lever 19, which is" provided on its inner side intermediate its ends with a pivot-pin 20, that is pivotally seated in the socket 15 of the boss 14. The lever 19 at its inner end projects through the side of the casing and is provided with a thumb-piece 21, and on the inner side of the lever and near its other end are formed two lugs or projections 22 and 23, between which is loosely disposed a short roller 24,that is held against lateraldisplacement by the cam 17 and the rod 5. The lever 19 is free to oscillate about its pivot 20 as a center, and the lip 12 serves to close the casing above the outer end of the lever-and prevents anything from dropping into the casing above the lever. An approximately V-shaped spring 25 is employed for holding the projecting end of the lever depressed and the opposite end of the same elevated, said spring being seated at one end beneath the flange 10 and behind the lip 13 and at its other end is fitted ina notch'26,
formed in the upper edges of the free end of the lever. The interior of the casing and the parts contained therein are concealed and pro tected by a a cover consisting of a fiat metallic plate 27, that is secured in place by asingle screw that is screwed through the plate 27 and the casing, suitable screw-holes 28 being provided for the purpose. Lugs 29 are formed on the inner face of thecover at the upper and lower edges of the latter, said lugs fitting in the slots 18 over the rod 5 and operating to center said rod in place in the slots. The operation of this part of my invention is as follows: Normally the spring 25 holds the lever 19 in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and when in this position the lug 23 holds the roller 24 thrust up tightly between the rod 5 and the inclined face 17 of the cam 16, and hence the rod will be tightly grippedin such manner that the sash cannot be lowered as long as the lever remains in the position described. The sash, however, may be freely raised without manipulating the lever, for the upward movement of the sash will cause the inclined face 17 of the cam to ride over and away from the roller 24, whereupon the roller will cease to grip the rod 5 and permit the sash to be freely raised. When it is desired to lower the sash 2, it is merely necessary to raise the thumb-piece 21, whereupon the roller 24 will be lowered from between the rod 5 and the inclined face of the cam, and as long as the lever be held in this position the sash may be freely raised and lowered; but the moment the lever is released the spring will operate to throw it into the position'shown in Fig. 2 and lock the sash, so that it cannot be lowered. \Vhen the sash 2 is raised to the top of the frame, it will be obvious that it can neither be raised or lowered without first raising the thumb-piece 21 to release the roller. When the fastening, however, is applied to the lower sash, it is desir able that the sash may be locked against movement in either direction in order that it may be held elevated at any desired height and be locked against upward movement when fully closed or lowered, and to this end I provide the fastening with duplex levers and rollers constructed and arranged as follows:
Referring to Figs. 4 to 7 of the drawings, the numeral 30 indicates the rod, which in this instance is secured at its lower end in a socket 31, secured to one end of the windowsill and at its upper end to a bracket 32, secured to one side of the window-frame. The numeral 33 indicates the casing of the fastening, similar in construction to the casing 8, before described, excepting that it is longer and is provided with two bosses for supporting the levers, two levers, two cams, and two rollers, the cams being reversely arranged, as will presently appear. In the said figures of drawings the numeral 34 indicates the two bosses arranged one above the other, and 35 and 36 the two oscillatory levers, each provided on its inner face with a pivot-pin 37, which is loosely pivoted in its corresponding boss 34. Each of the levers projects at its free end through the side of the casing and terminates in a thumb-piece 38, and said ends of the levers are normally held thrust apart by a bent spring 39, the ends of which are seated in notches 40, formed in the adjacent edges of the levers. On the inner face of the opposite end of each of said levers are formed two lugs 41 and 42, between which is mounted a short roller, the rollers of the upper and lower levers being, respectively, indicated by the numerals 43 and 44. The rod 30 passes through the casing in the same manner as the rod 5 passes through its casing 8, and on the inner face of the casing 33 are formed two flanges 45 and 46, having inclined faces 47 and 48, the face 47 of the upper cam being inclined upward and outward, while the face 48 of the lower cam is reversely inclined-'-that is to say, is inclined downward and outward-the rollers being held laterally in place between the lugs 41 and 42 by the rod 30 on one side and the inclined faces of the cams on the other. A cover 49 is screwed over the casing33 and its contained parts'by asingle screw in the manner before described. The operation of this form of the invention will be readily understood. Let it be assumed that the lower sash 3 is down. When in this position, the free ends of the levers 35 and 36 will be thrust apart by the spring 39, causing the lugs 41 to thrust the rollers 43 and 44 tightly between the inclined faces 47 and 48 of the cams 45 and 46 and the rod 30, and hence the roller 43'will prevent the sash from being raised as long as the levers remain in the position described. When it is desired to raise the sash, the thumb-pieces 38 are grasped between the thumb and index-finger and pressed toward one another, causing the lugs 42 to thrust the rollers 43 and 44 from between the inclined faces of the cams and the rod 30, whereupon the sash may be freely raised and lowered, and when it has been adj usted to the desired height the thumb-pieces are released and are instantly forced apart by the spring 39, upon which the rollers will be again thrust between the inclined faces of the cams and the rod and'the sash will be locked against movement in either direction.
While for the reasons stated it is desirable to provide the two dilferent forms of fastening for the upper andlower sashes, itwill be apparent that either form of the invention may be applied to both sashes.
Having described -my invention, what I claim is 1 In asash-fastening,the combination with astationaryvertical rod arranged in proximity to the sash, of a casing secured to the sash, a cam carried by the casing and having a face vertically inclined relatively to said rod, alever pivoted to said casing, a roller loosely carried by one end of said'lever and movably disposed between the inclined face of the cam and said rod, and means arranged to normally hold said lever in position to thrust the roller between the inclined face of the cam and the rod, substantially as described.
2. In a sash-fastening,the combination with a stationary vertical rod arranged in proximity to the sash, of a casing secured to the sash, a fixed cam in the casing having a face vertically inclined relatively to the rod, a lever pivoted to said casing, a roller loosely carried by one end of said lever and movably disposed between the inclined face of the cam and said rod, 2. spring for turning said lever on its pivot in a direction to thrust the roller between the inclined face of the cam and the rod, and meansconnected with the lever for turning the latter in a direction to move the roller out of contact with the inclined face of the cam and the rod, substantially as described I v 3.
