lVIYRON COSSEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO RELIANCE. BALL BEARING DOOR HANGER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. 1., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
GRAVITY DOOR-LOCK.
Application filed July 15, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Myron (lower, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gravity Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to looks for doors adapted to be operated by gravity and is concerned particularly with the use of such locks in connection with sliding doors, such as are commonly employed in connection with elevators.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a lock in which the operating parts are so disposed as to insure a strong pull thereon by gravity to lock the door while permitting easy manipulation thereof by the operator for the unlocking of the door.
A further object is to provide a lock of the character indicated which shall have one portion of its actuating mechanism arranged to be grasped by the operator to initiate movement of the lock and simultaneously to move the door.
Another object is to avoid the use of springs which have proved inefiicient and liable to frequent breakage.
Still another object is to simplify the construction of gravity locks, thereby lessening their cost of manufacture and rendering them less liable to derangement than known types of looks.
The invention will be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a gravity lock embodying the present invention and showing its application to a sliding elevator door.
In the figure the improved lock is shown as applied to a sliding door a, suspended from a movable carrier 72 mounted on fixed tracks 0 as by balls d. The door a is shown in its closed position with its inner edge abutting against the proximate edge of the frame 6 of what may be the wall of the elevator well. On the carrier 6 is pivotally mounted as on a bracket 1), a rocking lever f having a nose f constituting a latch which is adapted to engage with a fixed Specification of Letters Patent.

abutment c which may be mounted conveniently on one of the fixed tracks 0. To the opposite end of the latch f is secured pivotally an operating link .g, which may be disposed in a substantially vertical position and extend downward in juxtaposition to the inner face of the door a, and have secured pivotally to its lower end a bell crank lever it, one arm of which, as h, may be formed to constitute a handle for engagement by the hand of the operator. The bell crank lever 72. is supported on a pivot pin i carried by the door a or a suitable plate 71 fixed to the face of the door. It will be noted that the point of pivotal attachment of the lower end of the link 9 to the bell crank lever it is off center with respect to the pivot pin 2' by which the lever is supported, so that the weight of the link 9 together with the tail of the latch 7 serves to hold the nose 7 of the latch in a relatively raised position for engagement With the fixed abutment 0 on the track 0. When the operator desires to open the door he grasps the depending arm it of the bell crank lever it so as to rock the lever about the pin 6 and raise the link 9 vertically so as to depress the nose f of the latch f and disengage it from the fixed abutment 0. Movement of the bell crank lever 76- about the pin 2' in this manner, may be limited by a suitable buffer is carried by the plate 2" and preferably provided with resilient cushions 70 and k with which engage respectively the handle h and the lower end of the link 5/. Engagement of the grip 72. with the buffer is will limit the rocking movement of the lever 71. about the pin 2', and continued pressure on the grip will serve to slide the door to opened position. Conversely, when the grip 71/ is released by the operator the cushion 70 will serve to limit the downward movement of the link 9 and prevent noise. If desired, a second plate 2' may be secured on the outer side of the lever in and the bufier is so as to inclose portions of these parts and protect them.
It is to be understood that the lever it will be mounted on the inner face of the door at such a height as to place the operating grip h in convenient reach of the operator to facilitate the opening of the door.
The embodiment illustrated represents the preferred forms of the present invention since this embodiment has the advantages of In combination with a sliding door and simplicity in construction, cheapness in manufacture and facility in application of thelock to the door,'but it is to be underprovided they fall within the terms of the appended claim.
' I claim'a's my invention:
carrier therefor, a gravity lock including a latch mounted pivotally on the carrier, a fixed abutment with which the nose of the latch engages, a link pivotally secured to the tailof the latch and extending downwardly in a substantially vertical plane in juxtaposition to the inner face of the door, a bell crank lever mounted pivotally on the door Within convenient reach of the operator andhaving one end of one of its arms pivotally Copies 0! this patent may be obtained for five cents each, byvaddressing the ""Gommissionerof Patents,
attached to the lower end of the link and having the other arm formed to constitute a grip, the weight of the link and the first named arm of the bell'crank lever beingunbalanced with respect to thenose of the movement and also in juxtaposition to the grip of the bell crank lever to limit the latch to hold the same in engagement with movement of the-bell crank lever when the a latch is tripped, continued pressure 'upon the grip being transmitted by the buffer to the door. r
