RICHARD H. PRICE, OF BOONEVILLE, MISSISSIPPI.
SASH LOCK AND LIFT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,465, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed February 10, 1902. Serial No. 93,399. (llo model.)
T0 all whom, it 7am/y concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Booneville, in the county of Prentiss and State of Mississippi, have invented-V certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks and Lifts; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a sash lock and lift.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character'for use in connection with windows of dwellings and other buildings, which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensiveot production, andwhich will permit of the independent adjustment of the upper and lower sashes.
With this and other objects-in view the invention consists of certain novel featuresgof` construction, combination, and arrangement of'parts, which will be hereinafter morefully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a windowframe, illustrating the application of my invention, the two sashes being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the lower sash being shown slightly raised. Fig. 3 is a similar view, the upper sash beingshown in a lowered position; andFigA is a vertical'sectional view through one of the grips. ,'Fig. 52V
is an enlarged detail view of the grips, show-A ing them in operative position.
Referring to thedrawings, 1 denotes the window-frame or casing, 2 denotes the upper sash, and 3'the lower sash. These parts may be of any well-known or approved construction. n j p n v 'denotes a supporting-rodthe upper end of which is bent at a right angle to the body of the rod, is screw-threaded, and is adapted to engage the threads of a tubular studbracket 6, secured to the upper end of the upper sash 2. This screw-threaded connection of the rod with the bracket enables me to adjust the parts comprising the lock and lift to sashes of different thicknesses.
7 denotes a guidevbracket secured to the upper end of the sash 3, through which said rod projects, and 8y denotes a nger-piece screwed upon the lower end of the rod.
12 denotes a gripV secured to the side rail of the lower sash, `and 13 denotes a similar grip secured to the side of the window casing or frame. The grip 12 consists'of a metal casting or housing 1 2, in which are pivoted gripping-levers 19 andl 20, which are held apart in a divergent position by a coil-spring 12b, which encircles the rod 5. The rod 5 eX- tends through Yholes formed in the levers 20 and 19. The office of the lever 20 in its normal position is to prevent the upward movement of the sash 3, and the ofce of the lever 19 in its normal position is to prevent the downward movementof said sash.
12c denotes a lip projecting laterally from the base of the housing 12a for a purpose hereinafter to be` described. The grip 13 consists of a housing-13, in 'which is pivoted grip-levers 22 .and` 23, having apertures 13, through which the' supporting-rod projects, and these leverszare heldin divergent positionby a coil-spring" 13,V which is placedv about said rod and exerts its energy to spread the outer ends of said levers apart.
13d denotes' a lip projecting laterally from the top wall of-the housing 13a. This lip is within the path of movement of the grip-lever 20, and the' lip 12c is in the path of movement of `the lever 22. In other words, the lip 13(l coacts with the lever 2O and the lip 12c coacts Vwith the lever 22 toautomatically release said levers 20 and 22 from engagement with the lrod when the sashes are moved into closed position.
The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1 and it be desired toelevatethe lower sash 3, the grip-levers 19Iand 2O4aregrasped and moved toward each other, thus releasing them from the rod and .allowing the sash to be moved upwardly. 'Ifov move lthesash in the opposite direction, these levers'are grasped and compressed toward each other, and thus the sash is permitted to lower. When released, the levers exert a binding action upon the rod 5, the lever 19 serving to prevent the downward movement of the sash and the lever 20 serving to prevent the upward move- IOO ment of the sash. To lower the upper sash when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the grip-levers 2O and 22 are rendered inactive, or, in other Words, held from locking engagement with the rod 5 by reason of the fact of the lever 2O engaging the lip 13d and the lever 22 engaging the lip 12c of the housings 13 and 12, respectively, the levers 19 and 23 are grasped and compressed toward each other, thus freeing the rod 5 and permitting it to be lowered. By releasing the levers 19 and 23 the sash 2 may be held in any desired adjustment.
From the foregoing description, taken iu connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring au extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the Spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
vosges Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In asash lock and lift, the combination with a window-frame and the upper and lower sashes, of a supporting-rod connected at one end to the upper sash, grips, one secured to the window-frame and the other to the lower sash and each provided with spring-actuated grip-levers having holes through which said rod passes and is free to slide, each of said grips having a fixed part projecting into the path of movement of one of the opposing griplevers whereby the innermost or adjacent grip-levers are automatically unlocked from engagement with the rod when the sashes are in closed position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witmesses.
