To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Fnor Pnnnsoii, a subject of the King o-f Great Britain, residing at Lethbridge, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door0p erating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furnace doorsl and especially with reference to means for opening furnace doorsso as to avoid the necessity of putting down a shovel, loaded with coal, before opening a furnace door preparatory to throwing the coal in the furnace, the object of the invention being to provide an improved furnace door operating means of this character which is extremely cheap and simple, is strong and durable, is not likely to get out of order and which may be installed on any furnace of ordinary construction.

combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawing:-ll`ignre 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a furnace provided with doors and door operating devices constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line oma of Fig. 1, showing` the door closed in full lines and open in dotted lines.
For the purposes of this specification, a portion of the front end or casing of a furnace is indicated at 1, the door opening being indicated at 2 and the ash door being indicated at 3. A door frame et is bolted or otherwise secured on the front side of the wall 1 and extends around the door opening :2. On this frame is the lower door 5 andthe upper door G which are respectively provided at one end with hinges 7 8. Each door is pro-vided in its opposite A ennd and preferably near its upper side with a russi). Latches 10, to engage the inner side of the' door frame l are provided with stems 11 which are pivotally mounted in openings with which the furnace doors are provided and at the outer ends of the said stems are operating arms 12 which project from the free ends of the furnace doors, the inner ends of the said operating arms be ing mounted in the recess 10 and bearing on the bottom of said recess. An eye bolt 111 projects from the outer side of each furnace door, near the hinged end thereof and springs 15, which are connected to the furnace wall or front 1, as at 16 are connected also to the said eye bolts 141, the said springs acting to open the furnace doors.
then the doors are closed, they are held in closed position by the gravitating action of the operating arms 12 of the latches, the said operating arms normally holding the latches engaged with the inner side of the door frame 4f. A vertically movable operating bar 17 is mounted in guides 18 on the outer side of the door frame at and near the free ends of the doors 5 6. This operating bar is provided with a series of openings 19 and is also provided with tappet pins 2O which may be placed and are adjustable in the said openings and are so arranged as to bear respectively under t-he lower sides of the operating arms 12 of the latches. pedal 21 is provided with a vertical arm which is arranged to operate in a guide 23. A lever 241- is pivotally mounted as at 25, has one end pivotally connected as at 26 to the upper end of the pedal arm and has its opposite end connected pivotally as at 27 to the lower end of the operating bar 17. The weight of said operating bar is such thatit is normally in lowered position, shown in Fig. 1, and with its tappet pins just below the operating arms 12, the pedal being held normally in elevated position. The doors are normally closed as shown in Fig. 1 and also as shown in full lines in Fig. 2. ln order to open the doors, it is only necessary to place one foot on the pedal 21 and depress the same, thus causing the lever 24 to raise the operating bar 17. The upward movement of the operating bar causes its tappet pins lo engage the lower sides of the operating arms 12 to raise the outer ends of said operating arms, t-hus causing the stems of the latches to turn so that the latches disengage the inner side of the door frame at and, hence, the furnace 15, when the doors are thus released, operate to open the doors, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This renders it unnecessary for the person who attends the furnace to place a shovel loaded with coal on the floor before opening the furnace door. If it is desired that only one of the furnace doors shall be opened by the operating mechanism, the tappet pin which operates the latch arm of the other door can be removed from the operating bar 17.
Vhile I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I Would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, Without departing from the spiritof the invent-ion and Within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim l. A furnace Wall having a door opening, a door frame on the Wall and having a door opening of less length than that of the opening in the Wall so that one end of the door frame projects inwardly in and partly covers the opening in the Wall, a door hinged at the other end of the frame, and a latch on the inner side of the door at its free end7 arranged to engage the inner side of the said projecting end of the door frame, and said latch having a stem extending through and pivotally mounted in an opening in the door, and an operating arm at the outer end of said stem acting by gravity to hold the latch in fastened position.
2. A furnace having a door frame, a door hinged at one end of the door frame., a latch 30 carried by the other end of the door, adapted to engage the corresponding inner side of the door frame when the door is in closed position and having a stem pivotally mounted in the door and an operating arm 35 at the outer end of the said stem on the outer side of the door, said operating` arm acting by gravity to normally hold the latch in fastened position, a vertically movable opw erating bar mounted on the front side of 40 the door frame and having a tappet pin movable with said bar to engage and actuate the latch arm7 said tappet pin being below the latch arm When the bar is in normal depressed position, a lever mounted on the 45 IV.
