To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER G. WESTER- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State ot New York, have invented a new and lmproved Elevator-Well-Door Operator and Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to an improved device for holding the gate or .door of an elevator well or the like positively locked when closed so as to prevent opencation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is an inside elevation of my improved elevator well door operator and lock illustrating its application, the door being shown closed in solid lines and open in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional4 view vertically through the door and working parts of the device; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In illustrating the application of my improved device, an elevator well door 10 is shown having rollers 11 slidably supporting the door on a runner or track 12 which is suitably supported as within an elevator well 13 of the usual or any preferred construction but which in the present instance is shown as a frame-like structure. The numeral 14 designates the floor with which the bottom of the door contacts, there being a suitable guide 15 in which the lower edge of the door operates when opened. While the device is shown asapplied to an elevator well door or gate it is here explained that it may be applied to other doors and that` `the construction of the latter may vary in `many respects without departing from the vspirit of the invention. the door 1() is shown constructed of a chanln the illustration nel iron frame with the flanges 1G projecting inwardly and the intermediate or central `portion of the dooi closed by a frame-like j with the well or trame forming the same, but
in my present invention the locking means is provided at the opposite vertical edge and is operated at the free edge in the usual manner. For this purpose a bolt or bar 17 which is substantially horizontally disposed within the well at one side of the door opening with which the d oor 10 cooperates, is piv'oted as shown at 18 so as to swing vertically and has a reduced portion 19 at its free end formed by recessing its under edge or otherwise to provide a vertical shoulder 2O beneath t-he reduced portion. Secured to the inner side of the door 10 is a casting 21, the same having reduced apertured end portions bolted to the frame of the door which is channel shaped in cross section as heretofore described. The casting 21 is preferably located midway of the height of the door and-is provided with a slot 22 therethrough while alined slots 23 are provided in the flanges of the door frame adjacent thereto, said slots being adapted to receive the reduced extremity of the bolt or bar in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings so that the shoulder 20 will engage the edge portions 24 of the casting and thus hold the door locked in a closed position.
Pivoted intermediate its ends between the ianges of the other side of the door, as shown at 25, is an operating handle or lever 26 which at its lower end is pivot-ally connected as shown at 27 to a strap or link 28 having its inner end angularly bent oreX- tended inwardly, as shown at 29, and apertured. The casting 22 beneath the slotted portion `is provided with a recess 30 in which portion is provided with a recess 30 in which a horizontally disposed triggerv31 is pivoted, as shown at 32, for vertical swinging movement, said trigger having a vertical extension or contacting portion 33 at its free end with a rounded 110 upper edge. An upright 34- is fixed rigid to the trigger 31 preferably intermediate its ends and extends upwardly above t-he bar or bolt 17 where it is pivotally connected, as shown at 35, by means of'a rodv36 to the link 28. The end of the rod 36 which passes through the apertured bent portion of the link is threaded and has a nut 37 engaged thereon whereby when the rod is passed therethrough its length may be adjusted by means of the nut and the rod subsequent-ly engaged in the upright, or vice versa, to regulate the length of the rod and consequently the throw or movementl of the trigger 3l.
The connection of the rod with the upright is rendered detachable so as to facilitate the connection and adjustment, and the innermost ange of the side` ofthe frame carryingthe member 26 is slotted,v as shown at 38, to-slidably receive the link 28 there-v through, so that when the parts are in theA position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l; ofy
the drawings thelever will be vertically disposed and the trigger horizontally disposed so as to permit the bolt 17 to drop by its weight whereby the shoulder will contact- .wit-h the casting and hold the door positively in a closed position. A spring 39 or other suitable means may be provided to hold the trigger downwardly to permit the bolt to drop, and in the present'instance the spring is shown as attached to the trigger and to the frame of the door, thus positively insuring of the locking of the door upon the same being closed.
Whenv it is desired to open the door the operator grasps the handle portion ofthe lever 26 yand swings the same to the left on. its pivot, thus. drawing the rod 3G4 to the right and raising the trigger 3l on its pivot to contact with, the bolt 17 so as to elevate the latter and disengage the shoulder from the casting. The combination with a door slidably supported having a slotted portion; of a pivoted bolt coperating with said slotted portion to hold the door in a closed position, a trigger beneath said bolt7 a lever carried by the opposite portion of the door with respect to the slotted portion and operatively connected to the trigger for shitting the latter to release the bolt and permit the door to be opened, said connection between the lever and the trigger being adjustable to vary the movement of the trigger, and means normally holding the lever in a neutral position and permitting the bolt to engage the door.
The combination With a door having a trame of channel metal, said door being supported for horizontal sliding movement7 and a bolt pivotally supported for vertical swinging movement and projecting toward the inner edge of the door; of a slotted casting carried by the door frame, said bolt having a reduced portion forming a shoulder to engage the casting with the reduced portion passing through the slot, said frame having slots in alinement with the slot ot the casting, a lever pivoted in the opposite side of the frame, a trigger pivoted in the casting beneath the bolt and having an upwardly extending engaging portion to contact with the bolt, and connections between the lever and trigger operating through the slots for swinging the trigger vertically to disengage the shoulder from the casting to permit the door to be opened.
6. The combination with a door having a frame of channel metal, said door being supported for horizontal sliding movement, and a bolt pivotally supported for vertical swinging movement and projecting toward the inner edge of the door; of a slotted casting carried by the door frame, said bolt having a reduced portion forming a shoulder to engage the casting with the reduced portion passing through the slot, said frame having slots in alinement vvith the slot of the casting, a lever pivoted in the opposite side of the frame, a trigger pivoted in the casting beneath the bolt and having an up- Wardly extending engaging portion to contact with the bolt, an upright fixed to the trigger, a frame adjacent to the lever having a slot therein, and adjustable connection bet-Ween the upright and the lower end of the lever whereby when the lever is moved in the opening direction of the door the trigger is raised to release the bolt and open the door whereby the door will slide over the bolt with the adjustable connection passing through the slots.
