B. HERZ. TRANSOM LIFTER.
Patented Sept. 28, 1890.
ATTORN! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL I-IERZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRAN SOM-LIFTER;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 437,115, dated September 23, 1890. Application filed July 8, 1890- Serial No. 358,116. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL HERZ, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Device for Manipulating Doors and Windows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in means for operating and locking doors and windows that are hinged or pivoted.
The main features of the apparatus I employ are not new, but my invention is embodied in the construction and combination of certain parts, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of the improvement as applied in a closed position; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line on m of Fig. 1, with the device in an open position.
The improved device is provided with a shaft A, arranged vertically and mounted to turn and to slide in brackets B and O, secured one above the other on the door-casing. On the lower end of the shaft A is secured a handle D, and at the upper end of the said shaft is fastened an arm E, pivotally connect ed by a link F with an arm or bracket G, fastened to the door or window H,to be closed or opened and locked. As shown in the drawings, the door H has vertically-arranged pivots in the center, but the said window or door may be differently hinged or pivot-ed.
On the under side of the arm E is formed a lug 1, adapted to engage one of a series of notches J, arranged in the segment of a circle on top of the bracket 0. 0n the outer end of the said bracket is arranged a stop K, which limits the outward swinging movement of the arm E, which latter, when abutting on the said top, has moved the door or window into a fully open position, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
On the under side of the bracket 0 are arranged similar notches J and a stop K, so that the said bracket may be used on either side of the door-casing. The hub of the arm E is adapted to rest, when the device is in a normal position, on top of the bracket C, so
that the downward movement of the shaft is limited by the arm E.
The device is used as follows: When the door or window H is in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, the lug I of the arm E abuts against the shoulder formed by the notch on the right-hand side of the bracket 0. Thus the door H is locked and opening of the door or window by pressure on the outside is prevented. When the operator desires to open the door or window II, he takes hold of the handle D and pushes the same upward so as to raise the shaft A a short distance, to lift the lug I above the shoulder of the bracket 0. The operator then swings the arm E to theleft, so that the shaftA is turned and the arm E, by the link F, pulls on the arm or bracket G, so that the door or window H turns on its vertical pivots and thereby opens. When the desired position is reached, the operator drops the handle D, so that the shaft A, by its own weight, slides downward, and the lug I drops into the corresponding notch J or J on top of the bracket 0. Thus the door or window H is locked in an open position. When the operator desires to open the door or window fully, as shown in Fig. 2, he turns the handle D, as previously described, until the arm E strikes against the stop K. By then letting the shaft A drop, the lug I on the arm E engages the outermost notch.
J or J on the bracket 0, and the door is held in a fully open position, as shown in Fig 2. In order to close the door or window, the operator moves the handle D upward to raise the shaft A, and then swings the arm E to the right, so that the door orwindowHcloses, and then lets the shaft A drop, as previously described.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the vertically-arranged shaft A, having handles D E, one of which has the locking-lug I, with the semicircular brackets B and G,the latter 0 having notches EMIL HERZ.
