Application November 22, 1955, Serial No. 548,333
1 Claim. (Cl. 268-121) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in operating mechanisms for horizontally swinging windows to open and close the same.
An important object of invention is to provide an operator for service windows embodying foot pedal actuating means to open and close the window without necessitating the use of the hands for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a foot pedal window operator of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figures 3 and 4 are enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3-3 and 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the foot pedal; and
Figure 6 is a view in elevation of one of the spring hinges for the window.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of invention, the numeral 5 designates a vertical shaft having its lower end rotatably supported in a bearing socket 6 which is recessed in a floor or walk 7. The upper portion of the shaft is journaled in a bushing 8 which is recessed in a counter at 9 positioned adjacent the hinged edge of a horizontally swinging window 10. The window is hingedly mounted in a partition or wall 11 by means of a pair of hinge structures 12 of a conventional type and provided with spring means 13 arranged to swing the window into a closed position.
An arm 14 is formed with an opening 15 adjacent one 2,809,030 Patented Oct. 8, 1957 "ice end thereof to receive the upper portion of the shaft 5 and to which the arm is secured in a radial swingably adjusted position by a bolt and nut 16 passing through the bifurcated end portions 17 of the arm. A link 18 is pivotally connected at one end to the outer end portion of the arm 14 and the other end of the link is pivotally connected to a bracket 19 secured to the outer side of the window 10.
A lower arm 20 of a duplicate construction with respect to arm 14 is secured in a similar manner to the lower portion of shaft 5 and a link 21 is pivotally attached at one end to the lower arm 20 and is pivotally attached at its other end to the upper portion of a strap metal bracket 22 which is secured on top of a foot pedal 23. The foot pedal is pivotally attached to a bracket 24 which is suitably secured to the floor 7.
In the operation of the device the spring hinges 12 will swing the window 10 into its closed position and also serves to maintain the foot pedal 12 in its raised position, as shown by full lines in Figure 1. A downward movement of the foot pedal 23 by the foot of a person placed thereon will swing lower arm 20 to rock the shaft 5 and the rocking movement of the shaft will also swing the upper arm 14 and upper link 18 in a direction to swing the window 10 into an open position. Upon releasing the foot pedal 23 the spring hinges 12 will close the window.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
An operator for a horizontally swingable window hinged to a wall above a counter spaced above a floor, said operator comprising a vertical rock shaft rising from the floor through the counter, a socket in the floor journalling said shaft, upper and lower lateral arms on said shaft above the counter and adjacent the floor respectively, a link connecting the upper arm to the window, a foot pedal pivoted at one end on said floor and having an upstanding arm on its pivoted end, and a link connecting the upstanding arm to the lower arm.
