UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN L. POWELL, OF NEW CASTLE, INDIANA.
DOOR-OPENER.
SPEGIFICATTONforming .part of Letters Patent No. 276,626, dated May 1 1883.
Application filed January 6, 1883. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN L. POWELL, a
. citizen of the United Stat s, and a resident of New Castle, in the county 1' Henry and State elevation.
Like letters indicate the same parts.
The mechanism for opening the door is designed to be mainly concealed in the partitjgp, and, as shown in Fig. 1,is attached to the door jamb a. A b'nt lever, I), having a vertical arm, 0, standing behind the casing at of a door, and a horizontal arm, 6, which projects through the casing, is fulcrumed at f to a plate, g, secured to the door-jamb. Secured to the vertical arm of lever b isa fiat spring, h, which engagesa notchin asliding bolt, 2'. Said sliding bolt projects through the casing, and its end rests against the latchj of the door. A vertical sliding bar, It, is secured to the casing of the door in such a position that its upper end rests against the lower edge of the latch. Bar 7c is connected at its lower end with a short lever, l, which has its fulcrum at m. i The other end of leverl is connected to the horizontal arm of lever b by rod 11.. A second bent lever, 0, is also fulcrumed on plate g, and is connected with lever b,below its fulcrum, by a short rod or link, 1).
The operation of my device is as follows:
The door being closed, a person approaching it places the foot on the horizontal arm a of lever b, or on lever 0, applying theweight of the body thereto, and thus depressing the lever. 5 As the lever is depressed spring his put in tension and sliding bolt t is forced against the latch j. At the sametime vertical bark is forced upward against the latch, and the latch is raised out of the catch-plate 1", and the door 0 being releasedis pushed open by the recoil of spring h, operatiugagaiust the latch through sliding bolt t. The foot of the person having been removed the levers and sliding bolts are returned to their normal position by aspring, s." 5
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a door-latch secured to a door, of a bent lever adapted to be depressed by a person approaching the door,
and means, substantially such as described, for
causi g weight, when applied to said lever, to
exert simultaneously an upward and an outard pressure against thelatch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a door-latch secured to a door, of a bent lever adapted to be depressed by a person approaching the door, and means, substantially such as described, for causing weight, when applied to said lever, to
exert simultaneously a positive upward press ure and a yielding outward pressure against the latch, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a door'latch secured to a door, of sliding bolt i, spring 8, bent lever 1), spring h, vertical bar It, lever m, and rod at, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
