DEVICE FOR UNLATGHING AND OPENING DOORS.
W/TNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT @Printer DANIEL w. rrowER, OE GRAND RAPIDs, MICHIGAN, AssIeNOR rro THE GRAND RAPIDS RRAss COMPANY, OE s-AME PLACE.
DVIOEYFOR UNLATCHING AND OPENING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,571, dated February '5, 1895;
Application tiled September 10,1894- Scn'al llo. 522,676. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL XV. TOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Unlatching and Opening Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in a device for unlatcliing and Opening doors, and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a detail showing a modified 'construction of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures.
A represents a portion of the door, and A a portion of the casing thereof, and B a latch to secure the door when closed.
D is a vertically movable rod engaging the latch to lift the same, extending downward through a casing E and pressed downward by a spring L. A pin F engages a slot E in said casing and limits the vertical movement of said rod and also prevents its turning on its axis. The lower end of said rod is enlarged to form a shoulder to engage the spring, and to receive a roll G at the lower end thereof, which extends below the casing Pivoted in a suitable bracket l, and beneath said roll is a bell crank H, the horizontal arm of which engages said roll, and the other arm of said bell crank extends downward and outward and is provided with a foot plate H. Latches having horizontally sliding bolts B', Fig. 3, are preferred for use in conjunction with this device. These latches are made with a lug .I on the bolt B and a bell crank K, having avertical arm engaging said lug, and a horizontal arm engaged by the upper end of said rod D, is pivcted on the base plate whereby said bolt may be moved back by the upward movement of said rod.
The operation of my device is as follows: By placing the foot on the plate H', and de pressing the same the rod D rises and releases the latch B, or bolt B as the case may be. The horizontal arm of the bell crank H now forms an inclined plane engaging the roll G, andthe pressure of thespringL, throws the weight of the door on said roll which roll at once traverses the said inclined plane of the bell crank, the action of the spring fol-A lowing the descent of the roll along the same and thus giving an impetus to the door to throw it open.
What I claim isl. In combination with a door having a latch, a vertically movable rod engaging the latch lto open the same, and a pivoted lever engaging the lower end of said rod, and forming an inclined plane to be traversed by the same, to open the door, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a door, and alatch for the same, a vertically movable rod engaging the latch to open the same, a spring depressing said rod, a roll in the lower end of said rod, a bell crank lever engaging said roll, to' lift said rod and form an inclined plane to be traversed by said roll,substantially as described.
3. In combination with a door, having a horizontally movable bolt, a lug on said bolt, a bell crank the upper end of which engages said lug, a vertically movable rod engaging said bell crank, and a pivoted lever engaging the lower end of said rod and forming an inclined plane to be traversed by the same, substantially as described. f
4. In combination with a door having a latch, a vertically movable rod engaging said latch, a casing surrounding said rod and having a vertical slot, an enlarged lower end on said rod, a spring within the casing engaging the same, a pin in said rod engaging said slot, a roll in the lower end of said rod, abell crank engaging said roll and forming an inclined plane to be traversed by the same, and
