IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE.
dlp rlunhnlc ritardi in in tiger iittts tant mit limiting nrt nf tigt samt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, NELSON JOHNSON, 'of Jasper, in the county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences; land I do hereby declare the following to he a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification.
This invention consists in supporting panels between the posts on central pivots, and holding them by buttons or other suitable devices, so that they may be turned up on their pivots by hand to lessen their opposing surface to the wind, or by removing one or both of the pins which form their pivots, either panel will form amovable gate.
In the drawings, my invention is represented by a perspective view.
A A1 A2 A3 are posts, and B B B are panels, supported between them by pins passing through the said posts and the battons Z1 on the adjacent ends of two panels. The panels B are supported in their upright position by the buttons C on the opposite sidesof said posts,A the form of these buttons being such that they may be turned a suicient distance to release any desired panel without withdrawing the support from the one held by their opposite ends, as clearly shown on post A3, this feature being very desirable when a panel is being used as a gate, which may be done by slipping out one or both of its supporting pins a a sufficient distance, and removing it, the pins, if desired, being eonstructed as shown at post A, to facilitate their withdrawal.
The battens b may, if desired, be made in two parts, and gains cut in cach to form the mortises for the ends of the boards; or by having the parts of nneq'ual width, single gains of suficicnt depth to take the ends of the boards may be out from the larger part, or the mortises may be cut in a solid hatten, as represented in the drawings, as desired.
The panels may, when desired, have hinged legs at top and bottom, o n their opposite sides, in length equalling the distance between the bottom of the panel and its pivot, by which to support them when in their horizontal position.
My improved pivoted boards (the subject of a separate application) may be used by connecting their hattens at both bottom and top by longitudinal braces, and picket panels may be readily used by simply providing them with end battens of suitable form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pins a, in combination with the fence panels B, the said pins constituting the supporting pivots of the panels, and a part or all ofthem being removable 4to facilitate the withdrawal of the panels', substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with thenposts A A1 A2 A3 and panels B, I claim the buttons C, constructed and applied substantially as and for thepurpose specified..
To the above specification of my new and useful improvement in fences I have signed my hand this 15th day of July,`A. D. 1867.
NELSON JOHNSGN.
