Description

'No. 693,539. Patented Febl J8, I902. C. E. BUBRESS. v
ADJUSTABLE CHIMNEY TOP.. I (Application filed Dec. 4, 1899.)
(no Model.)
94 I muxKox 93, 4a 22mm UNlTE STATES CHARLES E. BURRESS, OF WIOI-IITA, KANSAS.
ADJUSTABLE CHIMNEY-"TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,539, dated February 18, 1902.
Application filed December 4, 1399. Serial 110- 739,187. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. BURREss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Chimney-Tops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the figures of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan of my improved adjustable chimney-top. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same, shown extended to a larger size for alarger size of chimney. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of said adjustable chimney-top. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan of a detail of the same; and Fig. 6 is an edge view of said adjustable chimney-top, showing an extension to said chimney, shown in dotted lines.
This invention relates to certain improvements in adjustable chimney-tops, and consists of a metallic cover for brick chimneys made adjustable to fit different sizes of chimneys; and the object of my invention is to make a chimney-top for covering and protecting the top of brick chimneys that can be adjusted to fit chimneys of different size and shape, and provide an easy and convenient way of adding a metallic extension to said brick chimney, making the draft higher.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a metallic plate. 2 represents a collar made integral with said plate 1. 3 represents adj ustable plates adjustably secured to said plate 1. at represents another of said adjustable plates, which is likewise adjustably secured to said plate 1. Said plate 4 is provided with the offset or depressed portions 5. 6' represents bolts passing through said plate 1 and through the slots 7 and 8 in the adjustable plates 3 and 4. 9 represents a flange around the edge of said plates 3 and 4 which extends down over the top layer of bricks on the chimney and acts as a protection to the same. 10 represents a metallic pipe (shown in dotted lines) fitted over said collar 2.
This chimney-top is made and used in the following manner: Said top is preferably made to fit the usual size of chimneys of one and one-half brick by two bricks. It may be made to fit any size. The plate 1 is made to fit the usual size. The bolts 6 are loosened to allow the plates 3 and 4 to be adjusted to the chimney, when said bolts are retigbtened and said top is removed from the chimney. Said chimney is then covered with a coating of cement or mortar. The cap or top is then placed on said chimney and pressed down on said cement, which will fill the slots 7 and 8 and the depressed portion 5, making said top a tight fit over said chimney. The adj ustingslots 7 in said plates 3 and 4 are for moving said plates out or in to fit oblong chimney tops, and the slots 8 are for moving said plates in or out to fit a square chimney. The dc pressed portions 5 are for the purpose of a1- lowing said plates 3 and t to lap one over the other and at the same time be adjustable to different sizes, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The collar 2 is made oblong and extends above said plate 1, so that a metallic pipe may be sprung over said collar for extending said chimney higher.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. An adjustable chimney-top consisting of a metallic plate having a central opening, metallic corner-plates having a downwardly-extending flange, V-shaped slots cut in said cornor-plates,- and bolts for adj ustably securing said corner-plates to said metallic plates.
2. An adjustable chimney-top consisting of a metallic plate having a central opening, a flange extending upward and surrounding said opening,- metallic corner-plates having a flange extending downward from the outer edge thereof, V-shaped slots cut in said corner-plates, and bolts for adj ustably securing said corner-plates to said metallic plate.
3. An adjustable chimney-top consisting of a metallic plate having a central opening with an upwardly-extending flange surrounding said opening, adjustable corner-plates adj ustably secured to the under side of the four corners of said metallic plate, two of said plates having depressed portions adapted to lap over the ends of the two corresponding plates, flanges extending down from the outer edges of said adjustable plates, and a means of adjustably securing said adjustable plates to
