BUSTLE AND HIP EXTENSION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,095, dated January 28, 1902.
Application filed October 5, 1901. Serial No. 77,689. (No model.)
ness to a skirt, especially over the hip and.
back portions.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a reduced rear perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same at the hip, and Fig. 5 is a similar View of the same at the rear middle portion.
The improved device consists, essentially,
of the hip-extension portions A A, the hipportions B B, and the bustle proper, O, all fastened at their middle to a rear center stay D, as plainly shown in the drawings, and one portion appearing spaced from the other, so that when the device is used, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the bustle proper, O, rests on the back of the wearer, the hip extensions rest and extend over the hips and to the front thereof, and the hip-extension portions are the corset.
nounced curved shape on lengthening or shortening the said tapes. On the upper ends of the stays O are arranged short strips F of a suitable fabric material carrying safety pins, eyelets, lacings, or other fastening devices F for securing the bustle to the rear of The front ends of the hip portions B B and the front ends of the hip-extension portions A A are fastened together on common stays G, and on these stays G are secured the tying bands H, adapted to be fastened over the front of the corset at or near the lower abdominal portion thereof. The
-hip extensions A A are each provided at or near their middle with stays I for connecting the several longitudinal strips with each other, the said stays I being curved, as plainly indicated in Fig. 4, to cause the hip extensions to properly bulge outwardly over the hip portions B B. From the stays I extend the braces J in upward directions to connect with the longitudinal strips forming the hip extensions to give the desired rigidity to the extensions.
The entire device is preferably covered by a suitable fabric material and is'attached to the corset, as previously mentioned, by the use of the devices F, and is drawn into the desired position by the bands H, tied in front over the abdominal portion of the corset.
Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described, comprising a bustle, hip portions, and hip-extension portions, all fastened together at their middle and extending one outside of the other, said hip portions and hip-extension portions arranged to lie in the same transverse plane as the bustle at the rear thereof and diverging forwardlyand laterally from the line of union with said bustle, as set forth.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a bustle, hip portions, and hip-extension portions, all fastened together at their middle and extending one outside of the other and spaced one from the other, said hip portions and hip'extension portions arranged to lie in the same transverse plane as the bustle at the rear thereof and diverging forwardly and laterally from the line of union with said bustle, as set forth.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a bustle, hip portions, and hip-extension portions, all fastened together at their rear and extending one outside of the other, said hip portions and hip-extension portions diverging laterally and forwardly with respect to the bustle beginning with the line of union at the rear of the article, the front ends of the hip-extension portions being united to the front ends of the hip portions, asset forth.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a bustle, hip portions, and hip-extension portions, all fastened together at their rear and extending one outside of the other, the front ends of the hip-extension portions being united to the front ends of the hip portions, and stays at the middle portion of the hip extensions to give the desired bulge t0 the sides of the hip extensions, said hip portions and hip-extension portions diverging laterally and forwardly with respect to the bustle beginning with the line of union at the rear of the article, as set forth.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a bustle, hip portions, and hip-extension portions, all fastened together at their middle and extending one outside of the other and on forwardly-diverging lines from the line of 6. A device of the class described, comprising a rear center stay, a bustle carried by the center stay, hip portions extending from the said center stay and forward of the bustle and spaced laterally thereto, and hip-extension portions extending from the said center stay outside of and in lateral spaced relation to the hip portions and connected therewith at the front ends, as set forth.
7. A device of the class described, comprising a rear center stay, a bustle carried by the center stay, hip portions extending from the said center stay and forward of the bustle and in lateral spaced relation thereto, hipextension portions extending from the said center stay outside of the hip portions and connected therewith at the front ends, and means for adjusting the said bustle and attaching it to a corset, as set forth.
8. A device of the class described, comprising a rear center stay, a bustle carried by the center stay, hip portions extending from the said center stay and forward of the bustle, hip-extension portions extending from the said center stay outside of the hip portions and connected therewith at the front ends, means carried by the said bustle for attaching the device to the corset, and bands at the united front ends of the hip portions and hipextension portions to attach the device to the abdominal part of a corset, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARY E. l/VETHERELL.
