IMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-KEYS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERX:
lle it known that l, E. M. KI.\in.\LL, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, and State 0t Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Keys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this speeifieation, in which Figure 1 is a side view, on, an enlarged scale, of a watch-key constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same, also on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
It is 1 frequent occurrence that the cases of a watch open with such ditlicalty that the thumb-nail is not still' or strong enough to open them in the usual manner, which necessitates the use of some article or implement for the purpose, such, for instance, as a knife-blade, which not only causes eonshlerahle trouble, hut alsomuch vexatious delay whenever for any purpose it is desired to open the watch.
This invention is designed to obviate this inconvenience, and it consists in the construction of the windingkey of a watch with a blade or sharp edge, formed thereon in such manner that the said key constitutes a very eilicient implement for opening the cases, and one which may be used with great convenience, and without any ap n'eeiable less of' time.
To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
The sot-ket" ol' the winding-key is shown at It, and 6 represents the head or thumb-ring" thereof, the socket being made of any usual or suitable form and material, and the thumb-ring being made of metal wire or other proper material, and fitted into or attached to the socket in any appro 'iriate manner. Formed at the innermost portion of the thumlrring, where it is joined to the socket, is a short neck, (1, upon which is placed the swivel c, by means of which the lacy is attached to the guard or chain of the watch. The outermost portion or end at the thumli'ring 7) is made llat upon each side, but with the said sides sloping towards each other in such manner that. the outer circumference of the aforesaid end of the thumb ring is brought to a moderately sharp edge, as shownnt Z1, and more plainly indicated in '2, or, in other words, the said outermost end or portion of the thumh-rin is t'ormed into a kind of blade, the edge of which may be forced under the edges of the watch-case in order to open the said case.
When it is desired to time open the watch-cas the sharp cdere oi the blade (1 is inserted underneath the edge of that lid there-d which it desired to rage, or open, and the said blade is then pushed outward in the same direction with reference to the lid that the thumb-nail is pushed outward in opening the case with the thumb-nail in the usual manner, which causes the lid to be forced outward and opened in the same way.
By this means the wntclecasc may he very easily and conveniently opened without danger of breaking or injuring the thumbnail, as in the common manner of opening the case, and without the delay and trouble occasioned by using an implement for the purpose not specially design d therefor.
What 1 t-Jllli as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
