E. JEWELL, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 67,985, dated August 20, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. JEWELL, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in WVatches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates more particularly to the American watch, so called; and consists in encircling; the opening between the two plates carrying the watch-movement with a band or rim so formed as to spring and fasten itself in place without additional means, the object being to prevent dirt or dust from entering the movement, and thus injuring and interfering with its perfect running.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in watches is illustrated, Figure 1 being an edge view of the plate carrying the watch-movement, but with my band applied; and Fig. 2, a section taken in the plane of the line a; m, Fig. 1.
Similarletters of reference indicate like parts.
A and B in thedrawings represent the two plates for carrying the ordinary movement of a watch; E the pillars connecting the two plates; G, the mainspring-barrel; and D, my encircling-band, divided at E for the purpose of giving it sufficient elasticity to be sprung about and around the opening between the two plates A B and press against the pillars B Each end of the band is cut out upon. the lower side, so that when the ends at- E are brought nearly together an opening shall be formed corresponding nearly in size to the diameter and thickness of the mainspring barrel 0, which, when the band is in position, partially protrudes through such opening, as represented in the drawing.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Pateut The divided spring-band D, encircling the works of a watch, situated between the inclosing-plates, its ends notched to fit over the mainspring-bar G, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
E. JEWELL.
