TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Bc it known that I, O. F. STEDMAN, of Ravenna, in the county of Portage, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Watch Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view ofthe case without the diaphragm.

A, fig. 1, is'an ordinary hunting case common to watches in general use, B and C are the back caps of the watch, D the glass frame, and E the face cap. F, 5g. 3, is the hinge of the cap E, G the catch by which the cap E is held closed. H, figs. 3 and 5, is the chamber or channel around within the case between the works and rim. I is the face plate, J, iig. 1, is the spring of the catch, K the spring by which the cap is sprung open. It is well known that watches soon becom'e dirty when in frequent use, more especially among a. certain 'lass of professions, as railroad men, machinists, and engineers, and thereby becoming irregular and uncertain in keeping time. This liability to become dirty so soon is that the watch being opened so frequently the dirt and dust find their way into the works through the joints ofthe cap hinges, and more especially through the spring slots, these slots being'of considerable size, and when the spring is pressed in alords a large.spe.ce for the dirt to enter. In order to remedy this trouble and exclude the dirt from the works when it has found its way through the openings referred to, a spring, L, iig-4, which may be of brass or other suitable material, being of the proper width and length to fit into the channel ofthe case on aline with the flange or shoulder M, iig. 3, upon which the face plate restsV is inserted. This spring is bent and sprung into its place, and thereby i t becomes self-sustaining, needing no aid of screws, pins, or rivets; at the same time it can be easily removed when required. This ring or diaphragm being made to fit close around, works between them and the hinges and spring slots. It completely excludes and protects the work from any dust that muy have found its way in, at the same time it oters no obstruction to the f rce opening of the case and a full play of the springs. Also, it takes uplpo extra room in the case, and is alike applicable to most cases new in use without changing them in any respect for its application.

What I claim `as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The spring L, as arranged in combination with the watch case, in the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.
