SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,172, dated December 31, 1901.

To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDITH ELMINA MONT- GOMERY, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Halse Rectory, Bishops Lydeard, Taunton,u
in the county of Somerset, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Scissors,Penknives,Knives, and Like Cutting Articles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved sharpener for scissors, penknives, knives, and like cutting articles, and although said Sharpener may be made of large size suitable for shears and knives, yet it is more especially designed to be kept in a ladys work-basket or tidy or in the users pocket.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side view showing a modified form having one halt` of the bar grooved and the other half plain, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation with ornamental ends.
In carrying my invention into 'effect I take a suitable length of solid round glass, colored or otherwise, about the same size in thickness as the stein of an ordinary wine-glass, and provide the length of its periphery with plain, flat, rounded, or beaded heads a, with interposed radial V shaped grooves b, as shown in Fig. 2. This forms the Sharpener proper for scissors.
To sharpen the scissors,the same are opened, the Sharpener placed between the blades, at
the rear ends thereof, and held stationary. The blades are then closed as it' for cutting, and some degree of pressure being exerted the scissors slip backward. The scissors are then moved forward, separating the blades, and the operation repeated until the necessary degree of sharpness required is obtained.

For sharpening knives I provide the end of the body portions with cap-pieces d, extend; ing some distance above the body portion of the'sharpener to prevent the blades of the knives from slipping when drawn backward and forward over the same.
As shown in Fig. 3, I can combine the scissors and knife Sharpener together-that is to say, one half for scissors and the other half for knives.
As shown in Fig. 4, the body portion a2 of the knife-Sharpener is provided with cappieces d.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A combined knife and scissors sharpening implement, having one portion of its body provided with radial peripheral grooves, the other portion having a plain surface substantially as specified.
