To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. JOHNSTON, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ink-Erasers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to metal erasers used for erasing from writing, drawing, or other kinds of paper the marks, spots, or stains made by ink, or otherwise dit'ficult or impossible to be removed by the ordinary caoutchouc eraser, and which metal erasers are usually provided, in addition to their erasing-siu'face, with a glazing-surface for restoring the calendered or smooth finish to the paper where it has been abraded by the eraser.

The purpose of my invention is to produce a handier, more efficient, and convenient metal ink-eraser; and the invention consists in a thick plate or block-like steel ink-eraser having an erasing-surface which is not only of convex form in direction of its length, but also of convex or rounded form transversely thereto, and has a file-cut dress, and which eraser is also provided on one of its sides or edges with a further double convex surface of a smooth finish to be used in glazing or restoring the paper after erasure.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference in dicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of an ink-eraser embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a face view of the same; Fig. 8, a longitudinal edge view thereof, and Fig. et a longitudinal section of the same.

The eraser A, which is shown in the accompanying drawings, is made of steel, or is steeled on its acting surface or surfaces, and is of a thick plate or block-like form, preferably of increasing width toward its one end and of a general size and thickness, so that it can be easily held between the fingers for manipulation without the aid of a handle, and be carried, if desired, when not in use, in the vestpocket. Its one end, Z), forms the erasing-surface, and is not only of convex construction in direction of its length, but also of rounded or convex shape transversely thereof, and this double convex surface is dressed as files are, cut to such degree of fineness as the character of the paper it is to be used upon requires, the file-cut dress 0 being of any suitable description. The opposite end, (1, of the eraser is also of convex shape in direction of its length and rounded or convexcd in a cross: direction to its length, but is left smooth or plain to form a glazing-surface for restoring the paper to a gloss-finish where erasures have been made.

The double convex construction of the abrading end Z) of the eraser provides for removing marks from paper, no matter how the surface of the paper lies, Without cutting through the paper, which is not the case where the erasing-surface is a straight or flat one, or only curved in direction of its length, but not rounded transversely, and in either case is provided with parallel knife-like cuttingedges in place of a file-cut dress, which has a more perfect abrading effect, an d which could not very Well be cut in a blade-shaped eraser without breaking the blade.

llaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, a steel inkeraser of plate or block-like construction, with its one marginal side or end of both convex form in direction of its length and rounded or of convex shape transversely thereto and finished with a file-cut dress, and having its opposite marginal side or end also of like double convex construction, but of a smooth finish on its surface, substantially as specified.
