To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. ACKERMANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraper-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in scraper sharpeners and more particularly to sharpeners for the blades of floor scrapers, but the same is adapted to operate upon any blade that can be inserted therein; and its object is to provide a convenient and reliable tool for the purpose, and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective of adevice embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of the same; Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 in position when commencing operation; Fig. 1 the same when finishing the operation; and, Figs. 5 and 6 enlarged details of the edge of the blade before and after being operated upon.

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.

1 represents the body of the device preferably of hard wood and provided with a 1011- gitudinal groove 2 in its under side to receive the blade to be operated upon and to permit the same to slide therein; 3 a sheet metal casing inclosing the top and sides of v the device and having therein a small opening 1 above the ball carrier closed by a slide 5 for the purpose of inserting lubricant to the device.

6 is an index to indicate the position of the ball carrier which is movable transversely within the case 3 and in a suitable recess near the middle of the body 1. This ball carrier 8 is adjusted by a screw 9 extending through the said carrier and provided with a milled head for manually turning the screw.

7 is a large steel ball made substantially in all directions within the case and retained in a recess within said case and projecting below the case to engage the'edge of the blade 12. A series of smaller balls 11 are inserted between the ball 7 and the plate 5.

In operation, the ball case is adjusted over near one side of the recess in which it has a transverse movement across the body as indicated in Figs. 3 and 45, and the blade 12 being inserted in the slot, the ball 7 engages and traverses the edge thereof presenting an inclined rolling surface thereto which tends to turn the edge and after repeated traversing of the ball 7 along the edge of the blade, the ball case is adjusted step by step transversely toward the other side of the recess and the operation is repeated until the edge of the blade is substantially turned, as illustrated in Figs. 3, A, 5, and 6.

Vhat I claim is 1. A scraper sharpener, comprising a body having an open slot in one side to slidably receive a blade, and a ball mounted in the body and projecting within the slot.

2. A scraper sharpener, comprising a body having a slot therein to receive the blade to be sharpened, a ball projecting within the slot to engage said blade, and means for adjusting the ball transversely of the slot.

3. A scraper sharpener, comprising a body having a slottherein, a case adjustable transversely of the body, a ball in the case projecting below the same and into the slot, and means for adjusting the case transversely of the body.

4. A scraper sharpener, comprising a body having a slot therein, a ball-case adjustable transversely of the body, a ball freely rotative in the case projecting below the same and within the slot, and a screw arranged transversely of the body and adapted to adjust the case.

5. In a scraper sharpener, a body having a longitudinal slot, a ball case adjustable transversely of the slot, a ball in the case projecting below the same and into the slot, a series of smaller balls above the first named ball, and a slide above the case to open and close the same.
