OTTO W. NIEDOMANSKI, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA.
PENCIL-SHARIENER.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro W. Ninco- Mimsiii, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have made certain new and uselul Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the :following is a specification.
My invention relates to pencil sharpeners oil the type suitable to be carried in the pocket and easily handled, my more particular purpose being to increase the eiliciency oit the Sharpener while promoting the simplicity oit the construction thereof.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawing foi'lriing a part of this specification, and in which like letters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing my improved pencil sharpener ready for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3*?) of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4l is a fragmentary detail of the cutting blade of the pencil Sharpener.
A body member is shown at 5, and in this instance is made of wood, though it may as well be composed of other material. This body member is provided with a groove 6 extending the entire length oit' the body member and having a substantially flat bottom. The body member 5 is provided with a compartment 7, this compartment being bounded in part by an inner :facing 8 and a step 9, and also by an obliquely disposed inner Yfacing 10.
The body member 5 is further provided with a slot 11 partially bounding the face 10, this slotA serving as a slideway. The slot 1,1 is provided with portions 12 which merge into opposite sides of the groove G and extend nearly flush with the outer upper surface of the body portion.
A cutting blade is shown at 13 and is provided with a slot 1st. This cutting blade is litted into the slideway 11 and may be adj usted relatively thereto in the general direction of 'the length of the blade. Extending through the slot 14 is a screw 15 provided with a head 16. By tightening the screw the blade 13 is held rigidly in position, but by loosening the screw the blade may be adjusted. the screw being tightened after each adjustment.
The blade 13 is provided with a straight, sharp edge 17, and is further provided with a bevel 18, this bevel extending completely Specification of Letters Patent.

across the groove G, as will be understood from` Fig. 3. The blade tits into the slot 13.
A plate 18a is provided at one of its ends with a bevel 1S" and at. its opposite end with a bent portion 18C. The body member 5 is provided with grooves 1Sd which merge into the upper portions 12 o1 slots 11., as may be understood :from Figs. 2 and 3. rl`he plate 18a when in position as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, extends` nearly into engagement with the blade 13. and serves as a lining for the bottom of the groove 6. The top of the plate 18, according to Figs. l and 2, is flush with a surface 1St of the wooden or body member, this surface being so located, how ever, that the bevel 1S of the blade extends between it and the plate 18a. An opening 1S is left between the step 9 and the straight edge 17 of the blade.
A slide 19 is provided with a bent portion 20, the latter serving as a limiting stop. This slide is fitted into a slot 21 with which the body member 5 is provided.
Then the blade 13 is in position, as indicated in Fig. 2, there is a little space 22 between the sharp edge of the blade at the middle portion thereof, and the shoulder 9.
The operation ot my device is as follows: The arts being assembled as above described. the blade 13 is adjusted and the slide 19 is fit-ted into position as indicated in Fig. 2. The operator now holds the body portion 5 and extends a pencil into the groove 6, the pencil inclined to any suitable angle relatively to the adjacent surface of the plate 18a. By alternately pulling the pencil backward and advancing it past the exposed bevel 1S of the cutting blade, the operator cuts away the small shavings from the pencil thus sharpening the pencil. The rubbish or shavings detached from the pencil pass through the space 22 and into the compartment 7.
I find that the effectiveness of the device is greatly improved by use of the plate 18, this plate being of metal admits of it being made smooth and accurate and its capacity to guide the pencil further is thus greatly increased. Vhenever the operator desires to throw out this material he opens slide 19 for the purpose.
I claim:
A pencil Sharpener comprising a body having central longitudinal grooves along relatively opposite sides thereof and provided Wth a transverse intermediate comhandles and abutting one end of the body,`
one of said plates being adapted to extend adjacent to the sharpened edge of the plate and to form a base for the respective groove upon which a pencil to be sharpened may be Y moved, andthe other plate forming a closure 15 at its respective end of the compartment, all for the purpose described.
