Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 29, 1916..
Application filed March 24, 1915. Serial No. 16,571.
i 0 all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, GEORGE E. RYAN, a citizen of the United .States, residing at Clinton, in the county of \Vorcester, in the State of h lassachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Skatec harpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap and convenient form of sharpener for skate runners, whereby owners or users of such skates may quickly sharpen the runners at no appreciable cost, and with practically no'loss of time, instead of being compelled to send such skates to a machme or repair shop, as is now most commonly practised.
.ih-ieliy described, my improved sharpener comprises a file that is mounted in a grooved block, and means for regulating said groove in order to receive and guide skate runners of different thickness, and said improvement is illustrated in the annexed drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my said sharpener and Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view of the same taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same showing, in dotted lines, a portion of a skate runner entered in the groove of the sharpener, in position to be sharpened.
Referring to these drawings, the letter denotes a block of suitable size to be readily grasped in one hand and, preferably, extended at its opposite sides, as at a, and notched as at a so that it may be the more firmly held while being used to sharpen skates. The block a is rabbeted as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 and within the rabbet is located a bar 6 which is spaced apart from the confronting wall of block a sufficiently to receive an ordinary skate runner; the said bar being slotted laterally as seen at c and c to receive respectively clamping screws d cl, by means of which the said bar may be first adjusted so that the device may receive the desired thickness of runner, and may then be firmly clamped to the block a by screwing home the said screws. At the bottom of the channel thus provided is located a file e of somewhat less length than the block a, said file being sunk down into the said block until it is practically flush therewith, and, by preference, the block is under-cut, as at a to receive one longitudinal edge portion of the file; the file being thus prevented from endwise or lateral displacement, while the sharpener is being used, and the file is prevented from upward deflection by the overlapping edge of the adjustable bar 6, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. When, however, it is necessary, or desirable, to remove the file, it can be done by releasing the bar 6 and moving it outward until the edge of the file is uncovered, when the file may be prized out of the pocket in which it is seated.
Then about to use the sharpener, it is first adjusted, as just described. The block is taken in one hand and the runner is entered in the channel, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Then by moving the block forth and back longitudinally and pressing the file into close abrading, or rasping, engagement with the runner, the latter is quickly ground and sharpened; the length of the file being such as to insure a straighbedge on the skate iron, and the side Walls of the channel serving as guides during the sharp ening operation.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent A skate sharpener of the type described, including a holder for the sharpening tool having a longitudinal depression or groove for the reception of the latter, a longitudinal wall of said depression or groove taking under a portion of said holder, said portion of the holder forming a guide-wall, the opposite longitudinal wall of said depression being undercut, and a movably held guidebar positioned upon said holderand adapted to overlie the latter wall of said depression, and clamp the sharpening tool in said depression.
