PLACKET-CLOSING DEVICE.

Be it known that we, HENRY DIEDRIGH SOHUTTE and GUSTAV SAENGER, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Placket-Olosing Devices, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for closing the placket of a skirt; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which will securely close said placket at all times and .by means of which the skirt may be held to the waist and the belt held in proper relative position; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a placket-closing device constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate partsof our improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which 7 Figure 1 is a backview of the upper portion 3 of a skirt provided with the usual placket and ourimproved means for closing the same; Fig. 2, a perspective back view of the closing device detached-from the skirt; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a view similar to Figs. 1 and 2, showing the operation of a part of the device.

In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at 5 the upper portion of a skirt provided with the usual placket 6, and in the practice of our invention we provide a placket-closure device comprising two flat parts 7 and 8, each of which consists of a central strip of steel or other suitable metal provided with a fabric, covering 9 and which are pivotally connected at their lower ends,

as shown at 10, and the part ,8 overlaps the part 7, and said parts of the placket-closing device are curved, so as to conform with the shape of the body below the waist and as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The steel strips of the parts 7 and 8 may be secured in their fabric covering in any desired manner, and said fabric covering is stitched thereon along the edges thereof in the usual manner, and the part 7 is provided at its upper end with an outwardly and downwardly directed hook 11, which is designed in practice to hold the waist in position.

The skirt 5 is provided at the opposite sides of the placket with flaps 12 and 13, and in practice the part 7 of the placket-closer is stitched onto the outside of the flap 12, while the part 8 is stitched to the inside of --the flap 13.

The part 7 is provided centrally thereof with a fiat metal clip or plate 14, preferably U shaped in cross-section and passed on over the edge of the part 7, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the part 8 is provided with a hook 15, whichis secured to the inner side thereof and the shank or body portion of which is covered by the fabric covering of the part 8, and in connecting the ends of the belt and closing the placket the part 8 is drawn over the part 7 and the hook 15 passes back of the metal plate or clip 14 and back of the part 7 and prevents said parts from separating at the middle portion thereof.

It will be observed that the metallic clip or U -shaped plate 14 is not a hook and does not operate in the manner of such, nor does it clasp or in any way project around the opposite member 8, neither is it permanently attached to the member 7, which it engages.

The special object of this clip or plate is to form a metallicedge and determinate bearing portion for that part of the member 7 which is engaged by the hook 15 on the opposite member 8 and is frictionally engaged thereby.

where contact of the hook 15 is intended or expected. By the use of our invention, however, the placket-closer may be completely formed and the members covered with the ICC fabric and the hook 15 secured to the member 8, and then the U-shaped plate or clip 14 may be manually applied to the outer edge of the member 7 in such position as to register with the already-applied hook 15 and in such manner as to clasp or engage on either side of the member 7, whereupon the said U- shaped plate or clip is pressed, stamped, or otherwise secured in position, and as it is impossible to sew through the said clip or plate there will naturally and necessarily be formed a pocket between the under surface of the said plate and the outer face of the skirt immediately beneath the same,andin this pocket fits the hook 15 when it is inserted or passed around the plate 14 after the two members have been brought together to close the placket. In this manner a neat peculiarly effective binding or locking device for the placket is formed. Moreover, the hook 15 is sewed through a fabric of the under surface of the member 8 of the placket-closer, and therefore this hook, as well as the U-shaped plate or clip 14, may be secured at any desired height or adjustment relatively to the respective members of the placket-closer, or when applied their position or height may be altered to improve the fit or set of the placket portion of the skirt, and they may also be removed by any dressmaker or wearer of the garment who does not desire to employ them, and they may, furthermore, be readily attached to placket closers of any desired type, size, quality, or material, according to whether the person ordering them desires these attachments to be used.

The part 8 of the placket-closure device is also provided at its upper end with a hook 16, which is adapted to engage with an ordinary eye, loop, or similar device 17, secured to the belt at the opposite side of the placket, and when the parts are thus connected the placket is entirely closed and remains closed, and no movement of the skirt or the bottom portion thereof can open said placket. In practice we also secure to the bottom portion of the waist or to the waistband a loop or link 18, (shown in Fig. 4,) with which the hook 11 engages, and this device securely holds the skirt and waist together and prevents their separation, and the link or loop 18 may be provided with a strip or tape 19, by which it may be secured to the waist or to the waistband. The ends of the waistband may be provided at the back with an independent connection, if desired; but the hook 16 and eye or loop 17 will serve for this purpose, and no further fastening device or devices are necessary. In stitching the part 7 of the placket-closing device to the flap 12 of the parts movably connected and one of which is adapted to overlap the other, the overlapping part or member being provided intermediate of its ends, upon its under surface, with a hook which projects inwardly from the outer edge thereof; and the outer edge of the overlapped or under member being provided with a metallic U -shaped plate or clip which clasps the edge of the said member and engages on both sides thereof and is adapted to be engaged by the hook of the overlapping member which when the placket-fastener is secured to a skirt forms a pocket between the under member thereof and the skirt to receive the hook of the upper member which engages the said plate or clip.

2. A placket-closure device comprising two parts movably connected and one of which is adapted to overlap the other, each of the said parts being surrounded by a casing of fabric, the overlapping part or member being pro vided intermediate of its ends, upon its under surface, .with a hook which projects inwardly from the outer edge thereof and is secured to the fabric thereof; and the outer edge of the overlapped or under member being provided with a metallic U-shaped plate or clip which clasps the edge of the said member and engages on both sides thereof and is adapted to be engaged by the hook of the overlapping member, and which is compressed or frictionally secured thereon over the fabric casing thereof and which when the placket-fastener is sewed to a skirt through the fabric forms a pocket between the under member and the said skirt to receive the hook of the upper member which engages the said plate or clip.

3. A placket-closu re device comprising two parts pivotally connected at their lower ends and one of which is adapted to overlap the other, and in practice, lies upon the outside thereof; the said overlapping part or member being provided centrally only upon its under surface with a hook which commences at the outer edge of the said member and projects inwardly of the said member and of the skirt and lies entirely beneath the said overlapping member whereby it may be hooked around the overlapped or under member; and the said overlapped or under member being provided upon its outer edge with a metallic U-shaped plate or clip which is frictionally engaged upon the outer edge thereof, and not extending completely around the same and being adapted to be vertically or longitudinally adjusted or moved upward upon the under or overlapped member and being adapted to be presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th frictionally engaged by the hook upon the unday of May, 1901.
