STEPHEN A. BARKER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
l-IECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 684,775, dated Ootobei-QQ, 1901. Application filed November 1'7, 1900. Serial No. 38,892. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment-fasteners, and more especially to attachments for neckties, whereby the strap or free end of the tie may be held securely in position after the same has been adjusted about the neck of the wearer.
Its primary object is to provide a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, which may be readily manufactured, and which will securely retain the strap in position after the same has been once placed in engagement therewith. 4 v
A further object is to so construct the device that thefsame may be readily concealed within the folds of a cravat or other tie.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a hollow device substantially in the form of a double frustum of a cone which is adapted to be secured in a suitable manner within the folds of the tie. The free end of the strap'is in serted into the fastener and will be retained in position therein by the contracted portion thereof.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a section through a cravat, showing the device in position therein. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Figs. 4 and 5 are views of modified forms of fasteners.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a tie within the folds of which is adapted to be secured a fastener comprising, preferably, two cone frustums 2, formed in one piece, the contracted ends of which are adjacent to each other. This fastener is hollow and adapted to receive the free end of the strap 3 of the tie after the same has been placed in position about the neck of the wearer. Apertures, as i, are formed within the frustums, at the outer edges thereof, so as to permit the device to be readily sewed or otherwise secured in position. This attachment, as above stated, is formed in one piece, and it can be constructed of any suitable material, as sheet metal. If desired, however, wire may be coiled so as to produce the desired form of fastener, and I have illustrated this construction in Figs. at and 5.
It will be understood that when the end of the strap is inserted into the fastener the same will be held in position therein by the contracted portion of the walls and cannot be removed unless more than the ordinary pressure is applied thereto. The device is extremely simple and durable in construc tion and is of such size that it can be readily concealed within the tie.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fastener for neckties comprisinga hollow body of the shape of a double frustum of a cone, having a contracted circular opening at its middle part and apertures adjacent to its upper and lower edges whereby the fas tener is secured directly to the necktie.
2. A fastener for neckties comprising a hollow body formed of coiled wire in the shape of a double frustum of a cone, having a contracted circular opening at its middle part and kinks in the upper and lower coils providing apertures adjacent to its upper and lower edges whereby the fastener is secured directly to the necktie. V
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN A. BARKER.
