TO'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I', HIRAM H. BEERS, of Toulon, in the county of Stark, and State of Illinois, have invented anew 'and improved Pad-Break and Crimp; and 'I do hereby declare that the following is :al full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference bcing'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a self-adjusting pad-break or crimp .for self-adjusting pad-treesemployed in the manufacture of harnesses. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved pad-breal and crimp is illustratedi Figure llbeing aplan or top view of the same, with it opened, and
Figure 2 a central longitudinal vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the bed-piece to the break or crimp, which, in width, thickness, and length, should be about five, one and one-half. and six inches respectively, or thereabouts. F, a lever, hung to bedpiece A wit-h a metal hinge, G. `This lever F, at its end where hinged to the bed-piece A, is ot' a size and dimension corresponding thereto, and from such end for about twelve inches more or less of its length, when it is sloped or tapered oil' to form a handle, FZ. B, the die, secured to bed-piece A, whicl1 die is to be made adjustable to any size desired by increasing or diminishing by means of screws, through which it is attached to the bed-piece This die is also so constructed as to form a concave surface on the pad when completed, with the edges iat and ready for stitching to the padskirt. D, a standard morti'sed in the bed-piece'A, where it'is fastened by a bolt or otherwise. .From this bed-piece A it rises, and in its upper portion has a slot, E, forthe purpose of receiving a key to hold the lever F down in place. G2, a mould on lever F, to lit die B. This mould has aconvex under surface, so as to force the leather` to its proper place and shape, and thus make lt fit the pad-skirt exactly. The lever F has a slot, H, init, for the standard to pass through.
By means of the break or crimp above described, a. great amount ofY labor and material can be saved, it enabling as much to be accomplished in one day as by the usual mode would require ten days, as well as producing a pad'superior in shape and neatness. Y
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A crimp or break for pads, having nn adjustable die, B, all made substantially as described.
HIRAM H. BEERS.
