TOY.
SPEGEFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,499, dated August 27, 1901.
Application filed April 5, 1901. Serial No. 54,424. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, MATTHEW DUFFNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful Improvements in sounding toys, and has for its object to construct a novel, effective, and simple toy of this character.
Briefly described, the invention comprises a handle member preferably formed in two sections for convenience in manufacturing, which sections are securely fastened together and have means within the same for supporting a shaft which carries a bell. This shaft extends through the bell and has mounted thereon a Weighted figure or other device. A tapper is carried by the shaft, which is adapted to be engaged by lugs carried by the handle member, so as to strike the tapper against the bell to emit the sound. The shaft is rotated by means of a string or cord which is connected thereto and extends outwardly through the handle member. As this string or cord is pulled to unwind the same from the shaft and the latter, together with the bell, thereby rotated the weighted figure or other device carried by the shaft is given sufficient momentum to continue the rotation of the shaft, and thus rewind the string or cord thereon, so as to impart a continuous motion to the rotating iigure or other device and a continuous sounding of the bell as long as the string or cord is operated. All of this construction will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, and in describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one section of the handle member. Fig. 3 is a like view of the rotatable shaft.
To put my invention into practice I provide a handle comprising two sections 1, each of which have flared upper ends 2. These sections are adapted to fit together, forming a substantially hollow handle, the one section 5 5 having near its lower end a boss 3, provided with a threaded aperture to receive a securing-screw 4, which is inserted through the other section of the handle, with its threaded end engaged into said boss to fasten the two 6o sections of the handle together. These handlesections carry about midway of their length a shelf 5, that in each section of the handle being provided with a groove 6, so that when the handle-sections are together an aperture is formed to receive a rotatable shaft 7, which carries a washer 8, adapted to rest upon the part of the handle-sections. This shaft 7 is provided below the washer S with a threaded portion 9, which is adapted to receive a 7o nut 10, by means of which the shaft is prevented from vertical movement. Connected to the shaft 7 near its lower end is an operating cord, string, or cable 11, which extends outwardly through one of the handle-sections and is preferably provided with a ring 12 or like device on the outer end to form a grip,
by means of which the string may be pulled and the shaft 7 rotated. This shaft 7 extends through the bell 14, the mouth of 8o which is of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the handle at the upper end of the latter, so as to give a neat appearance to the toy. The shaft is rigidly secured to the bell, and this shaft carries on 8 5 the end extending above the bell a disk 15, to which is secured a ligure 16 vor similar device, which carries a rod 17, provided with dumbbells or weights 18 on its ends. The shaft 7 has secured thereto above the collar or washer 9o 8 a spring tapper-arm 19, carrying a tapper 2() on its outer end, and this arm as the shaft is rotated will be sprung away from said shaft into position to be engaged by the substantially triangular-shaped lugs 21, one of which 9 5v is carried by each of the handle-sections 1.
In operation it will be observed that presuming the cord or cable 1l to be wound upon the shaft, as shown in Fig. 1, it will be noted that when this cord or cable is unwound from roo the shaft by pulling the cord or cable outwardly a rotary movement will be imparted to the shaft 7, to the bell, and to the weighted figure carried on top of the shaft and bell.
When the cord has been unwound from its shaft, the pull on the cord is relieved, so as to permit the momentum which has been imparted to the Weighted figure to continue the rotation of the shaft, and thus rewind the cord upon the shaft, which rewinding is checked by the operator again pulling outwardly on the cord or cable, thus imparting a continuous rotary movement to the Weighted figure and the continuous sounding of the bell by reason of the contact of the tapperarm 19 with the lugs 2l,carried by the handle.
It will be noted in the practice of my invention that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.`
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sounding toy, a handle member formed in two equal sections secured together and provided with an interior shelf, a vertical shaft mounted in said shelf for rotation and held against vertical movement, a bell mounted on the shaft, a weighted device mounted on the shaft, a tapper carried by the shaft, and interior lugs carried by the handle at opposite sides thereof to be engaged by the tapper to actuate the latter and cause it to strike the bell to sound the same as the shaft is rotated, substantially as described.
2. In a sounding toy, a handle member formed in two equal sections adapted to be matched together, means for securing said sections to each other, an interior shelf carried by said sections,a vertical shaft mounted in said shelf, means mounted upon said shaft -above and below the shelf to hold the shaft against vertical movement, a bell mounted on the shaft, a weighted device carried by the shaft above the bell, a tapper secured to the shaft, interior lugs carried by the handle for engagement with the tapper to cause the latter to strike the bell as the shaft is rotated, and an operating cord or cable connected to the shaft at its lower end and extending outwardly through the handle whereby rotary movement may be imparted to the shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiilx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
