To all whom it may concern: v I
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. JEwELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys of that general class comprising an object to be revolved, a drum to be turned in one direction by a pull cord, a ratchet mechanism, and a spring connected to the drum to rotate the Same backward when the pull on the cord is relaxed, torewind the latter and 'at the same time, through the ratchet mechanism effect rapid rotation of'said obj ect;
Heretofore all devices of this general class as far as applicant has been able to learn, are objectionable in that the drums are journaled on the shaft of the object to be revolved and hence retard or arrest the rotation of the object, upon the next pull upon the cord for retensioning the spring employed to efiect rotation of the object.
My object is to produce a toy of this general class which is of such construction that the rotation of the drum to store up power in the spring for continuing the revolution of the object shall have no appreciable retarding action upon the latter.
Another object isto produce a toy' ofthe class outlined in which the rotation of the object can be maintained and accelerated when desired, and which embodies the desirable features of simplicity, compactness, strength and durability; f
With these general objects in View, the invention consists in certain-novel and peculiar features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it maybe fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing. in which:

said block is'providedwith a central opening 11 for the reception of a flanged hearing socket 12, the flange being secured to and upon the block. The socket is provided internally with an upwardly tapering boss 13, having conical bearing 14 at its apex.
Vertically above the socketvbearing described, the top bar 5 or said frame, is pro.-. vided with an opening 15' receiving a flanged bearing sleeve 16, the upper end of the same being pressed inward to. form a V-shaped bearing collar 17.
18 is a vertical shaft having a tapering H lower end engaging bearing 14 and extending through, the bearingsleevevlfi, the said shaft belng diametrically reduced adjacent the plane of the V-sh'ap'ed collar of bearing 16, to produce a shoulder 19 having a thin or line engagement or bearing on the said collar portion of sleeve 16, just below the point of smallest diameter of said collar portion, so that the latter shall guard against upward movement of said shaft when the same is revolved at a high rate of speed. At its upper end the shaft is shown as provided with a supporting collar 20 having one or more upstanding pins 21 and screwed upon the upper end of the shaft is an ornamental cap nut 22.
