Description

No. 679,506. Patented July 30, 19m.
6. W. KRABILL.
PLUIIB LEVEL.
(Application filed Apr. 4, 1901.)
iv Z 0 M, 7 W 0 e G UNTTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WV. KRABILL, OF MILFORD, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PETER M. SMITH, OF CANTON, OHIO.
LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 679, dated July 1901- Application filed April 4, 1901.
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KRABILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the level, showing the different parts properly connected. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showinga portion of the levelbody and the plate connected thereto. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line a; a, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the bob and its indicators or points. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the bob. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the side plates, showing parts broken away.
The present invention has relation to plumb-levels; and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter d'escribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawllJgS.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the level-bar, which is preferably formed of wood and of any desired length and size, reference being had to convenience in handling. The bar 1 is provided at its center with the chamber 2, over which chamber are placed the side plates 3, said side plates being formed alike and not connected to the bar 1 by suitable wood screws or their equivalents. The plates 3 are each provided with the curved slots or openings 4, over which is located the scaled portion 5, said scaled portions being formed integral with the plates 3 by bending said plates inward or at right angles to the plate proper and then downward, as illustrated at 6, Fig. 6.
The bob 7 is substantially of the form shown Serial No. 54 266. (No model.)
and is provided with a chamber 8, said chamber being shown at its bottom or lower end with a cap-screw 9.
To the bob 7 are attached the indicators or pointers 9, said pointers being pivotally mounted upon the lugs 10 and are held in proper position with reference to the bob 7 by means of the screws 11. For the purpose of properly adjusting the pointers 9 they are each provided with the slots 12, through which slots the screws 11 are passed and said screws seated in the bob 7.
The object and purpose of pivotally attaching the pointers 9 is to provide a means for bringing said pointers into true adjustment with reference to the scales 13 or, in other words, have the pointers indicate no degrees when the bob is at rest, it being understood that the bar 1 when the pointers indicate no degrees is to be in a true horizontal position or, in other words, in a level position.
For the purpose of preventing the bob from swinging or oscillating for a considerable length of time the chamber 8 is partially filled with mercury, by which arrangement the bob is quickly brought at rest. It will be understood that the chamber 8 should be only partially filled with mercury, so that the mercury will have an opportunity to move in the chamber with the oscillations of the bob; but by the movement of the mercury the bob is quickly brought to rest.
For the purpose of providing pivotal points for the bob 7 to swing upon the pointed screws 14 are provided, said pointed screws being connected to the plates 3 by means of the screw-threaded apertures 15. It will be understood that the screws 14 should be so adjusted that the bob 7 will be free to turn upon the pointed screws 14:, the sockets 16 being formed in the lugs 10 to receive the pointed ends of the screws 14.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a bar provided with a chamber, plates located upon the sides of the I pointers and seated in the bob, all arranged, 1o chamber and provided with o curved. slots .or substantially as and for the purpose specified. openings, and scaled portions located at the In testimony that I claim the above I have sides of the openings in the plates, a chamhereunto subscribed my name in the presence bered bob pivotally connected to the plates of two witnesses.
