Description
R. L. POWELL.
POST LIFTER. APPLICATION men OCT. 5. 19.11.
Patehted Mar. 19, 1918.
RYONAL I4. POWELL, OF CLEVELAND, MONTANA.
POST-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed October 5, 1917. Serial No. 194,899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RYONAL L. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Blaine and State 6 of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Lifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a post lifter and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lever, having a chain detachably secured to'one end of the lever and adapted to surround a post, whereby swinging the lever upon a fulcrum carried thereby, the
post will be raised to withdraw it from the ground.
A further object of this invention is to provide a standard constructed from a single length of sheet metal being bent in T-shaped formation and pivoted to a yoke slidably mounted on the lever to provide an adjustable fulcrum whereby the leverage upon the lever may be regulated as desired.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference isto be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, I .in which v Figure 1 is a side elevation of a post lifter, constructed in accordance with my invention,
I Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of F ig. 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a lever having mounted on one of its ends a plate as illustrated at 2 for an engagement with a post. A pair of plates 3 are secured to the lever 1 adjacent the plate 2 by means of bolts 4 and have their free ends bent to form hooks 5 for receiving the ends of a chain 6. A yoke 7 is slidably mounted on the lever 1 and has its ends secured together by a bolt 8 on which 7 is mounted a substantially T-shaped stand ard 9 constructed from a single length of sheet metal or the like, being first bent to form horizontal feet portions 10 and the ends thereof extending in parallel relation to form the vertical portion of the T-shaped standard. The vertical portion of the T- shaped standard is apertured to receive the bolt Sand being positioned between the ends of the yoke 7 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 to form a fulcrum.
In operation, the lever lis placed in an inclined position as illustrated in Fig. 1' having the plate 2 in engagement with the post to be extracted, the chain 6 is then placed around the post and by pushing downwardly upon the free end of the lever, the T-shaped standard acting as a fulcrum, the post will be extracted from the ground. The yoke 7 Y may be slid along the lever 1 to adjust the levera e of the lever as desired. 1
Wh1le I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A post lifter comprising a T-shaped standard constructed from a single length of metal being bent upon itself to form feet portions adapted to rest flatly upon the ground and the ends thereof being bent vertically and parallel with each other to form a standard, a single length of metal being bent to form a yoke having spaced ears pivoted to the upper end of the'standard, a lever slidable 1n the yoke and means securing the lever to a post.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature
