CLOTHES-LINE FASTENER.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Applicationfiled April 29, 1908. Serial No. 429,879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE O. BURNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to clothes line fasteners, the object in view being to provide a simple and effective clothes line fastener which may be detachably fastened to a wall or like support, the fastener doing away with all delicate parts such as springs and pivots and being adapted to lines of different sizes, the fastener operating to clamp the line by the strain placed on the line, for example, by the weight of the clothes suspended thereon.
With the above general object in View the invention consists in the-novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of the fastener embodying the present invention. Fig. 2- is a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the grip. I
The improved clothes line fastener comprises a base plate 1 which is vertically elongated as shown in Fig. 1 and provided with upper and lower key- hole slots 2 and 3 preferably chamfered or countersunk as shown at 3 adapting the base to be detachably connected to a wall or like support indicated at 4 by means of screws 5 or their equivalent. The larger ends of the key-hole slots are disposed downward so as to avoid any tendency of the base plate to escape from its position.
Extending outward from the base plate are parallel lugs 6 the same being connected adjacent to their outer ends at a suitable distance from the base plate by a pin or rivet 7 which forms the support for the movable element of the device which is best shown in Fig. 3, said element being in the nature of a grip and comprising a curved body 8 ada ted to slide behind the pin 7 as best shown in *ig.
2. The lower end of the grip 8 has its inner surface roughened or serrated as shown at 9 and is also provided with cylindrical enlargements 10 the ends of which project on opposite sides of the body 8 to form pintles or bearings 11 adapted to bear against the under sides of the lugs 6 as shown in Fig. 1 to prevent the upward escape of the grip. At its opposite end the grip is provided with a guide 12 comprising upturned flanges 13 between which the clothes line indicated at 14 passes, the flanges 13 extending beyond the side edges of the body 8 and thereby forming shoulders which are adapted to come in con tact with the lugs 6 to prevent the downward escape of the grip. Just beneath the lugs 6, the outer face of the base plate 1 is roughened or serrated as shown at 1.5 so that the device comprises oppositely arranged roughened surfaces between which the line 14 is securely clamped when tension or strain is brought to bear on said line, the line bearing down upon the guide 12 and rocking the grip upon the pin 7 as a fulcrum.
When the device is not needed in use the entire clothes line fastener together with the clothes line may be removed from the support, leaving only the fastener screws 5.
Having described the invention I claim- A line fastener comprising a base plate, lugs extending outward therefrom, a pin connecting the said lugs at a distance from the plate, and a grip supported by said pin and adapted under the influence of the line to rock upon and slide transversely of said pin, said grip comprising a line gripping face, a line guide, and lateral shoulders which cooperate with the lugs to prevent the escape of the grip from the base plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE G. BURNARD.
