ATTORNEY m: NORRIS PETERS ca. Pnomuruawunmcmu. u c.
FRANCIS M. STACKPOLE, 0F WORTHINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA;
LINE-LEVEL AND SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1918.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1917. Serial No. 174,997.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. STACK- POLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worthington, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Levels and Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new'and useful improvements in tools and the principal object of the invention is to provide a combined line level and square.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for removably holding the level on the square.
A further object of the invention is to provide the level with means whereby the same can be easily and quickly arranged on a line.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front View of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof with part of the square shown in section.
In these figures 1 indicates the'frame of the level having its lower part bifurcated to provide the members 2 and 3 and these members receive one arm of a square 4 between them. Each member consistsof the end bars 5 having their lower ends connected by the curved bar 6 and the cross bar 7 connects the two end bars together intermediate their ends. The end bars 5 of the two members are respectively merged at their upper portion to form the level carrying part and have hooks 8 formed at their extreme upper ends to engage the wire 9. Intermediate the ends of the unbifurcated portions of the end bars is located a pair'of bars 10 which carriesthe tube 11 forming the level. One of the cross bars 7 carries a screw 12 for clamping the device on the square.
By suspending the device on the line by means of the hooks 8 the trueness of the line relative to the horizontal plane will be indicated, and when the square is used the level will indicate the position of the same relative to the horizontal or Vertical plane.
It is thought from the foregoingthat the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may 7 make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7
I claim as my invention: 1. The herein described line level comprising a frame consisting of two end bars forked at their lower portions and havingv hooks at their upper extremities, a pair of side bars connecting the fork arms, a set screw through one of said bars, bars connecting the shanks of said end bars, and a level carried by and between the last-named bars.
2. The herein described line level comprising a frame consisting of two end bars forked at their lower portions, a pair of side bars connecting the fork arms and spaced for the reception of one arm of a square, bars connecting the shanks of said endbars, and a level carried by and between the lastnamed bars. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS M. STACKPOLE.
