COLTER CLAMP.
(Application filed Mar. 26, 1900.:

By (u-vent STATES FFCQ COLTER-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,352, dated June 12, 1900.
Application filed March 26, 1900. Serial No. 10,271. (No model.)
To ctZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD EDWARD HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grady, in the county of Lincoln and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Oolter-Olamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to colter-clamps; and its object is to provide a device of this class that can be applied to any plow-beam and securely hold a colter to the same.
The preferred form of the invention is described in the; following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the same, and in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plow, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 isan enlarged perspective view of the clamp detached. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1ngs.
The invention, as shown, comprises a pair of clips 10 and 11, pivotally connected and adapted to embrace the colter and secure the same to the plow-beam. 'The clip 10 preferably consists of a single rod, the ends of which are bent at substantially right angles to the main portion to form retaining or bolt arms 12. The ends of these arms 12 are screwthreaded, as at 13, for the reception of the nuts 14:. A clamp-plate 15 is provided with suitable openings for the reception of the ends of the retaining or bolt arms 12. The clip 11 is also preferably made of a single red, and it has its ends bent at substantially right angles to the main portion to form the stoparms 16. The two clips are pivotally connected at their central portion by means of the pivot-pin 17.
For the purpose of illustrating the applied position of the device an ordinary plow-beam 18 and colter 19 are shown. The clips 10 and 11 are arranged diagonally across the shank of the colter, the retaining-arms 12 of the clip 10 engaging in front of and behind the colter and above and below the plow-beam, respectively, and the clip 11 being arranged in the opposite direction with the stop-arms 16 engaging behind and in front of the colter and above and below the beam, respectively. The threaded ends 13 project beyond the opposite side of the beam and pass through the openings in the clamp-plate 15. The nuts 14 are screwed tightly down upon the plate 15, thereby clamping the oolter to the beam. It will be seen that by this simple construction the colter is clamped at four points to the beam, so that there is no chance of its slipping either forward or backward. Furthermore, the colter is clamped by the clip 11 to the beam diagonally across from the front lower portion to the rear upper portion, whereby it is not as liable to be broken or bent as with the ordinary single clip that extends from the rear lower portion to the front upper portion, which thus leaves the front edge of the colter from the top of the beam to the point free.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction,operati0n,and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that the device is not to be limited to clamp ing colters only, as it is evident that it may be used for connecting a variety of objects; nor is the invention to be limited to the exact construction shown, as various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificin g any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clamp of the class described, comprisinga pair of crossed clips pivotally connected, substantially as described.
2. A clamp of the class described, comprising a pair of cross-connected clips, one of said clips being provided with bolt ends, substantially as described.
3. A clamp of the class described, comprising a pair of diagonally-crossed clips pivot ally connected, one of said clips being provided with bolt ends, and a plate connecting the bolt ends, substantially as described.
A. A device of the class described, comprisin g a pair of clips pivot-ally connected at their central portions, the ends of said clips being In testimony that I claim the foregoing as bent at substantially right angles to the main my own I have hereto afixed my signature in portion, the ends of one arm being screwthe presence of two Witnesses.
