UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
WILLIAM G. KERN, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
JAR-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,077, dated July 23, 1901.
Application filed April 5, 1901. Serial No. 54,413. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. KERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention pertains to a cover or lid. for jars and the like. The invention pertains more particularly to a cover for goods contained in jars and like receptacles used in grocery and other stocks. Ordinarily such goods as pickles, jams, 8210., are either left uncovered to catch dust or are covered by a piece of paper or board; but such methods are undesirable and far from affording the proper protection. Stock of this nature has often to be thrown away, because persons knowing the manner in which it is kept will not buy it.
It is my object to provide a cheap, portable, and dust-tight cover which can be clamped in place on nearly all receptacles, several sizes being employed to meet all sizes of such receptacles.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved lid mounted on the top of a jar. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same device mounted on the jar. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my lid or cover, and Fig. 4. is a perspective view of a portion of a clamp and support or rest for the lid.
In the several figures, A indicates a jar upon which is mounted a cover consisting of the parts B and G. The former portion is provided on top with a metal clamping device consisting of the body D, secured to said portion B by screws E This clamp branches at each side to form the forks or prongs F, against which the cover portion 0 rests when raised to the dotted-line position in Fig. 1. A depending arm G on D carries a screw H, which is sufficiently below the top of the jar to engage the usual projecting lip thereof, as shown. The cover-section B is also provided underneath with a block B, having a curved surface to correspond with the curve of the inner side of the jar. This curve is indicated It will be seen in dotted line B in Fig. 3.
that by the use of said block and the screw H the cover can be rigidly attached to any desired receptacle. The part 0 is hinged to B and is provided with a glass J, through which the contents of the jar may be examined, and a knob L is provided for convenience in raising the lid. A rack for carrying a display-card K is mounted on the top of the clamp D and consists of a block M, having a slot N, into which said display-card is set. The screws E E pass through said block and serve to hold both it and the clamp firmly in place at the same time. The forks F serve to receive a dipping-fork O, as well as to support the lid 0 when thrown back on the hinges I I, as before intimated. By providing one or two sizes of this device any size of jar may be accommodated, as already described.
I am not aware of such a jar-cover as I illustrate and describe, and therefore What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a jar-cover, the combination of a jar upon which the cover is mounted, the coversections B and O hinged together, the block B secured to the under side of the section B to be within and engage the inner surface of the neck of the jar, the clamp D and the display-card block M secured to the said section B as described and shown, said clamp depending below the cover opposite the said block B, the screw H therein for grasping the jar, and the forked extremities F F of the part D for holding a fork and supporting the hinged section 0 when raised substantially as described and shown.
2. In a jar-cover, the combination of the lid-sections B and O on the top of the jar, clamp D on the former, the block 13 also on the section B at the bottom for the purpose set forth, the display-card holder M, screws E E for securing it and the clamp in place, the glass J in the section 0 all arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVILLIAM O. KERN.
