SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,996, dated July 23, 1901. Application filed December 31,1900. Serial No. 41,566. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH DE MAYO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coats, of which the following is a full and complete specifi cation, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to the manufacture of coats and similar garments; and it consists of a coat or similar garment made from a single piece of material.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan View of a pattern which I employ in the manufacture of a coat or similar garment, and Fig. 2 a front view of a coat partially formed from said pattern.

In the practice of my invention I provide a pattern, such as is shown in Fig. 1, which is cut from paper or any suitable material and which comprises a body portion 5, having side extensions 6 and an upwardly-direct ed central portion 7, and the tops of the side extensions 6 are each provided adjacent to the upwardly-directed portion '7 with downwardly-directed elliptical recesses 8, between which and the outer edges of the separate side portions 6 the tops of said side portions are provided with two

9 and 10. Formed in the upwardly-directed central portion 7 of the body portion of the pattern is a neck-opening 11, at the sides of which are upwardly and inwardly curved gores 12, and separate sleeve-patterns 13 are connected with the upper end of the up wardly-directed central portion 7 of the pattern-body,and the lower edges of these sleevepatterns are curved downwardly, beginning at the outer corners 14:, to about midway of the length thereof, as shown at 15, and then upwardly to the point 16, at which point is an upwardly and inwardly directed short gore 17, and the side edges of the upwardly-directed central portions '7 of the body of the pattern form the inner edges of said gores. At the top of the neck-opening is a gore 18, forming curved edges 20, at the upper outer corners of which are downwardly and outwardly and inwardly curved spaces or gores formed by the inner

21 and 22 and outer curved lines 23, and the upper edges 24 of the sleeve portions of the pattern extend from the outer upper corners of the gore 18 and are curved upwardly and downwardly to the points 25, these last curves being very slight. The part 7 of the pattern forms the back neck portion of the coat, and the coat is formed by folding the separate parts of the material thereof, after it has been cut by means of the pattern, into the position shown in Fig. 2. In this operation the sides 6 of the body portion of the pattern are folded around to the front, and the sleeve members 13 are folded longitudinally, and the

21 and 22 and 9 and 10 are brought together, the former overlapping the latter, and the fingers 26 of the sleeve-patterns are folded underneath, together with the front upper edges of the sleeve-patterns, so' as to complete the arms, and said fingers extend upwardly at the back and complete the connection of the sleeves with the shoulder portions of the garment.

In Fig. 2 the coat is shown without a collar; but it will be understood that a collar may be applied thereto in the usual manner, if desired, and in this operation the parts 20 in Fig. 2 are turned down to form the lapels of the coat, and with proper care and skill in the construction of the pattern and in put ting the coat together a perfectly-fitting garment of this class may be made in this manner at a much less cost than is usual in the manufacture of this class of garments.

It will be understood that the shoulder portions of the garment are formed integrally with the sleeves, said sleeves forming an extension of the shoulder portions,'and the folding of the sleeve parts 13 to form said sleeves also forms the shoulders of the garment.

My invention is not limited to the exact form of the pattern'hereinbefore shown and described, and it will be apparent that the change therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages,

and I reserve the right to make all such al-.

terations therein as fairly come within the scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A coat or similar garment, composed of a single piece, comprising a body portion having side extensions, a central upwardly-di-' rected portion in which the neckopening is formed, and side extensions from said neckopening which form the shoulders and sleeves of the garment, said parts being adapted to be folded so as to form the coat, said neckopening being provided with side gores and the top of the pattern being provided with a central gore communicating with the neckopening and at the outer edges'of which are inwardly and downwardly curved gores or formed, and side extensions from said neck opening which form the shoulders and sleeves of the garment, said parts being adapted to be folded so as to form the coat, said neckopening being provided with side gores and the top of the pattern being provided with a central gore communicating with the neckopening and at the outer edges of which are inwardly and downwardly curved gores or openings formed in the shoulder and sleeve portions, and the top of the side extensions of the body portions being also provided with sleeve-openings, substantially as shown and described.
