JOSEPH DE MAYO, OF MOUNT VERNON, NE lv YORK.
COAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,498, dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed July 5, 1901. Serial No. 67,074. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, JosEPH DE MAYO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coats or Garments, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to coats and similar upper garments of the class known as singlepiece garments or those formed from asingle piece of fabric and applies to the finished garment or to the blank or pattern for forming the same.
The object of my invention is to construct a ladys garment having a constricted waist, the body and sleeves of which and all save the collar-cover are formed of a single piece of fabric, the seams of which garment are reduced to a minimum in both length and number; and to such ends the same consists in substance of a garment formed of a single sheet or web of suitable fabric first provided with a suitably-indented contour, the edges of various parts of which contour have been afterward secured together by sewing or otherwise at the points required to form the desired garment, which garment is usually but not necessarily provided with an outer collar piece or cover formed of a different fabric, or a blank out of which such a garment may be easily formed, or of a pattern-sheet of the same contour as such blank.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the pattern or blank out of which my improved single-piece coat or garment is formed, and Fig. 2 is a front view in perspective of the completed garment formed from such pattern or blank.
In the practice of my invention I provide a pattern or blank, such as shown in Fig. 1, cut from paper or any other suitable material, such pattern or blank comprising a tail portion 5, having side tail extensions 6 and an upper central waist portion 7. The side extensions 6 fold forward onto one another, as
tion, and the top line of each of such side extensions (i is provided with the upward merging curves 9 and 10 and the downward curve 11, from the end of which latter extends downward the concave contour-line 12, connecting with the like concave contour-line 13, connected at its upper end with the similar concave contour-line 14, which connects at its upper end with a short line 15, whereby a downwardly-directed darta and an upwardlydirected dart Z) are formed and the line also connects with the convex lower line 10 of the sleeve portion or blank 17, which is bounded on the end by the concave contourline 18 and on the top and inner upper end by the concave lines 19 and 20. The contour-line 20 connects at the end with the concave line 21, which connects with the like line 22,which connects with the straight line 23, connecting with the straight or nearly straight line 24, which connects with the straightline 25,which connects with the curved line 26, which forms the boundary on that side of the neck orifice of the blank, the portions bounded by the lines 21 to 26, inclusive, constituting one of the side upper front breast portions of the completed garment when secured in position, as shown in Fig. 2 at 27. Between the line 25 on the other side of the neck-orifice and extending upward from the central waist or body portion 7 of the sheet are two reversely-curved, outwardly-flared, and usually square-end lapel tangs or pieces 28, which in the completed garment when turned down and secured in proper manner to the main portion of the blank serve to form the upper portion of the lapel of the garment and a portion of the collar, as shown in Fig. 2 at 29.
The part 7 of the blank forms the back portion of the coat or garment, which is formed by folding the blank, formed as shown in Fig. 1, into the position shown in Fig. 2 and then securing the edges of the material together at all the abutting points save those constituting the front and sleeve end openings, which is done by stitching or securing the same together in any suitable manner. I11 this operation the sides of the body portion of the blank are folded to the front, and the point of the breast portion 27 secured to the portion 6 at the point 31, the top portion shown in Fig. 2, to form the forward tail porhaving been folded down to the front for that tom portion of the inner end of such sleeve to the body portion of the garment, and the two sides of the sleeve-blanks 16 and 17 are then stitched together to form the sleeve, and the end 18 turned back and stitched down .upon itself to form a cuff-band in the wellknown manner. The lapel-tangs 28 are then turned down and sewed to the line 26, the square ends thereof helping to form the notch 3% between the lapel and the collar, and an outer covering 35, of Velvet or similar material, stiffened with the usual collar-stiffening fabric, being usuallyprovided to form a stiffer and more ornamental collar-piece.
Although I have described my invention as particularly adapted for use in making coats and ladies garments, the chief object thereof is to provide an improved pattern for making ladies cloaks and sack-coats for gentlemen, and it is for this reason that the darts Ct and b are employed, the lines of these darts being curved, so as to produce a fit of the coat or garment and to make the latter conform to the body beneath the arms.
I do not intend to limit myself to the exact form of construction shown and described herein, as it is evident that many changes and modifications in such construction may be made without departing from the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A coat or similar garment composed of a single piece, said piece comprising a body portion having side extensions, a central upwardly-directed portion in which the neckopening is formed, and side extensions con nected with said upwardly-directed portion and which form the shoulders and sleeves of the garment, said parts being adapted to be folded so as to form a garment, and the body portion being provided at the top where the side extensions join said body portion and where the sleeves connect with the upwardlydirected extensions with downwardly and upwardly directed darts, the inner lines or edges of which are curved inwardly, substantially as shown and described.
2. A coat or similar garment composed of a single piece, the blank from which it is formed comprising a bodyportion having side extensions, a centrally upwardly directed portion in which the neck-opening is formed, said neck-opening being provided at the bottom thereof with upwardly-directed members designed to form a part of the lapels of the garment, side extensions connected with the upwardly-directed portion and designed to form the shoulders and sleeves of the garment, said parts being adapted to be folded so as to form said garment, substantially as shown and described.
3. A coat or similar garment composed of a single piece, the blank from which it is formed comprising a body portion having side extensions, a centrally upwardly directed portion in which the neck-opening is formed, said neck-opening being provided at the bottom thereof with upwardly-directed members designed to form a part of the lapels of the garment, side extensions connected with the upwardly-directed portion and designed to form the shoulders and sleeves of the garment, said parts being adapted to be folded so as to form said garment, and the body portion being also provided at the top of the side extensions with downwardly-directed darts, the inner lines or edges of which are curved inwardly, substantially as shown and described.
L. A coat or similar garment composed of a single piece, the blank from which said piece is formed comprising a body portion having side extensions, a central upwardlydirected portion in which the neck-opening is formed, said neck-opening being provided at the bottom thereof with upwardly-directed members designed to form a part of the lapels of the garment, side extensions connected with the upwardly-directed portion and designed to form the shoulders and the sleeves of the garment, said parts being adapted to be folded so as to form said garment, and the body portion being also provided at the top of the side extensions and at the bottom of the sleeve extension with downwardly and upwardly directed darts, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 1st day of July, 1901.
JOSEPH DE MAYO.
