This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wearing apparel and more particularly to coats, jackets, and like garments.

In making overgarments, coats, jackets and the like of the customary more or less form fitting type having sleeves set-in at the outer end of the shoulders in the usual manner, those portions of such a garment which overlie the shoulders are padded or otherwise built up. This, however, produces an artificial shoulder contour, and the weight and quantity of material required for this foundation, such as canvas, haircloth, padding and wadding, very often gives the wearer the uncomfortable feeling or sense of being cramped and unduly burdened.

The generic object of the present invention therefore, is to provide an overgarment, coat, jacket or the like wherein the aforementioned objectionable features occurring in garments of this character are eliminated. More particularly, the object of the invention is to provide a more or less form-fitting coat, jacket or like garment which will conform substantially to the natural contour of the shoulders of the wearer, and eliminate the necessity for padding or building up the shoulder portions of such garments.

These and other objects of they invention and the features and details of the fabrication thereof are set forth hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a coat or the like embodying the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a view in plan showing one side and front body section of the coat disclosed in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a View similar to the disclosure in Fig. 2, showing one back body section of the coat; and

Fig. 4 is a combined view in plan showing the several sections of one sleeve of the coat.

Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 2 and 3 thereof, reference numeral I designates a side and front body section of an overgarment, coat, jacket or the like, and reference numeral 2 similarly designates a rear or back body section thereof. To assemble the body portion of the garment two back body sections 2 are stitched, sewed or otherwise secured together along their adjacent corresponding side edges 3 and the opposite outer side edges 4 thereof are respectively secured in a similar manner to the side edges 5 of a side and front body section I as at 6.

It will be observed that the body sections 2 constituting the back of the coat or other garment are cut in the usual manner to provide respecgether in such manner that their respective lower tively a substantially straight edge I at the upper end thereof and a downwardly extending slightly arcuate edge 8, the latter partially defining an armhole and the former edge I being arranged to lie centrally along the top of the 5 shoulder of the wearer radially with respect to his or her neck and extend from substantially the extreme point or outer tip of said shoulder inwardly to an edge 9 partially defining the collar or neck line to which is connected the adja- 10 cent edge portion of the usual collar Ill. The side and front body sections I of the coat, jacket, or the like, on the other hand, are cut as indicated to provide respectively an edge 9a. which defines the collar or neck line of the garment in conjunction with the edge 9 of the back section 2 as well as an arcuate concave edge I I which extends forwardly from below the arm pit of the wearer upwardly across the front face of the shoulder substantially to the collar line of the garment in decreasing spaced relation with respect to the edge I of the back section 2.

Referring now to Fig. 4 of the drawings, reference numeral I2 designates generally a front outer section of each sleeve which is cut to provide opposite side edges I3 and I4 and an extension I5, the latter being provided with converging side edges I6 and Il respectively and arranged for insertion between the body sections I and 2 substantially to the collar line of the garment. Reference numeral I8 designates generally an outer rear sleeve section which is suitably cut to provide opposite side edges I9 and 20 and a slightly convex arcuate edge 2| at the upper end thereof. Similarly, reference numeral 22 designates an inner sleeve section which is provided with

23 and 24 respectively and a substantially concave arcuate edge 25 at the top or upper end thereof as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

The front and rear outer sleeve sections I2 and I8 are stitched, sewed or otherwise secured together along their respective side edges I4 and I9, as indicated at 26, and the opposite outer side edges I3. and 2B of each of said sections I2 and I8 are similarly secured to the respective

23 and 24 of the inner sleeve section 22 to complete the sleeves of the garment, said sleeve sections I2, I8 and 22 being secured to- 50 end edges, designated collectively by reference numeral 21, are in substantial alignment with one another as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

In attaching the sleeves to the body of the garment, the side edge I6 of the extension I5 is 55 stitched, sewed or otherwise secured to the arcuate edge ll of the side and front body section I starting from the upper end of each of said edges 16 and II respectively as indicated at 2B. In similar manner the substantially concave upper end edge 25 of the inner sleeve section 22 is secured respectively to the remaining portion of the arcuate edge H and the lower portion of the arcuate edge 8 of the adjacent side and front and back body sections l and 2 as indicated at 29 and 30, and the slightly convex upper end edge 2| of the outer rear sleeve section I8 is then secured to the remaining adjacent portion of said arcuate edge 8 of the back section 2 as indicated at 3| so that the upper end 32 of said edge ll coincides with the upper end 33 of the edge 8 at the outer end of the substantially straight edge I, after which the other edge I! of the previously mentioned extension I5 is stitched, sewed or otherwise secured to the aforementioned edge I of the back body section 2 as indicated at 34 to complete the garment. Thus it will be observed that the extension l5 will reside between the edges II and 1 of the body sections I and 2 respectively overlying the forward portion of the shoulder of the wearer and extending substantially to the collar line 9, 9a of the garment.

In accordance with the present invention, a coat, jacket or like garment may be made more or less form-fitting without padding or otherwise building up those portions thereof which overlie the shoulders of the wearer, thus allowing the garment to conform substantially to the natural contour of said shoulders, and while I have described the sleeves and body portions of the garment as being composed of a particular number of sleeve and body sections, it will be obvious that said sleeves and body may be composed of a greater or less number of sections than that specifically set forth without departing from the invention. So too, although a specific embodiment of the structural features and details of the invention have been set forth and described, it is not intended that said invention be precisely limited thereto, but that changes and modifications in the details of construction thereof may be incorporated where within the scope of the annexed claims.

I claim:

1. In a garment of the character described, a body covering portion having an edge defining a collar line, said body covering portion being cut adjacent its upper end to define at least one armhole opening therein, said opening extending forwardly and upwardly across the front face of a shoulder of the wearer in gradually decreasing width substantially to said collar line and terminating at its upper edge in a line extending centrally along the top of said shoulder inwardly from substantially the outer tip thereof radially with respect to the neck of a wearer, and a sleeve secured to the body covering portion at the armhole opening therein and including an extension arranged to reside in the extended portion of said opening and overlie the portion of the shoulder of the wearer located forwardly of the top of said shoulder and inwardly from the apex thereof substantially to the collar line.

2. In a garment of the character described, a back body section having an edge partially defining a collar line and otherwise cut adjacent its upper end to provide respectively a substantially straight edge and a downwardly extending arcuate edge, the former being arranged to extend centrally along a shoulder of the wearer from substantially the outer tip thereof substantially to the collar line radially with respect to the neck of the wearer and the latter partially defining an armhole, a side and front body section having an edge defining another portion of said collar line secured to said back body section and cut adjacent its upper end to provide a substantially arcuate edge the lower portion of which cooperates with the downwardly extending arcuate edge of the side and front body section being arranged to extend forwardly from the bottom of said armhole and upwardly across the front of the shoulder of the wearer substantially to the collar line in gradually decreasing spaced relation with respect to the radially disposed straight edge of said back body section, a sleeve secured along a portion of its upper end edge to the downwardly extending arcuate edge of the back body section and the lower portion of the arcuate edge of said side and front body section, and an extension forming a part of said sleeve arranged to reside between said body sections substantially to the collar line of the garment so as to overlie the forward portion of the shoulder of the wearer, said extension being secured along its side edges to the substantially straight edge of the back body section and the upper portion of the arcuate edge of the side and front body section respectively.

3. In a garment of the character described, a back body section having an edge partially defining a collar line, and otherwise cut adjacent its upper end to provide respectively a second edge partially defining an armhole and a third edge arranged to extend centrally along a shoulder of the wearer from substantially the outer tip thereof substantially to said collar line radially with respect to the neck of the wearer, a side and front body section having an edge defining another portion of said collar line secured to said back body section and cut adjacent its upper end to provide a second edge the lower portion of which cooperates with the second mentioned edge of the back body section in partially defining the armhole, said second arcuate edge of the side and front body section being arranged to extend forwardly from the bottom of said armhole and upwardly across the front of the shoulder of the wearer substantially to the collar line in gradually decreasing spaced relation with respect to the third mentioned edge of said back body sec- H tion, a sleeve secured throughout a portion of its upper end edge to the second mentioned edge of the back body section and the lower portion of the second edge of said side and front body section, and an extension forming a pait of the upper end of said sleeve arranged to reside between said body sections substantially to the collar line of the garment so as to overlie the forward portion of the shoulder of the wearer, said extension being secured along its side edges to the third mentioned edge of the back body section and the upper portion of the second edge of the side and front body section respectively.
