UNITED 'STATES PATENr` Orricnf JOHN PETTERSON, OF MINGO .INOTION, OHIO.
RATCHET-DRILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,128, dated .Tuly 9, 1901.
Application filed November 26, 1900. Serial No. 37,759. @To model.)
T0 all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN PETTERsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mingo Junction, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Drills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improved ratchetdrill; and it consists in the provision of a de-l vice whereby the drill while being operated may be fed forward, together with the certain details of construction and combination of parts,- as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved ratchetdrill, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, a part of which is shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the lower portion of the drill. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the lower portion of the drill, showing the side opposite to that of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the pin upon which the several pawls operate. Fig. 'is a perspective View of the short lever attached to the pin above described. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the adjusting-screw detached from itsposition.
To vconstruct a ratchet-drill in accordance with my invention, I provide a lever 1 of a suitable length and form at the base of the same a transverse cylindrical opening for the reception of the socket portion 2. This socket portion is formed with a ratchet-Wheel 5 and is held in position bya second ratchetwheel 4, located upon the opposite side of the handle 1, and the two pieces 2-and 4 joinedI the one to the other by screws 6 in a manner that will permit the parts to freely revolve in the handle. Placed through the handle 1 a short distance above the socket-piece 2 is a pin 18, upon which two pawls 14 and 16 are journaled, one on either side of the handle, to engage with the ratchet-wheels 4 and 5 and the said pawls provided with springs 15 to keep the same engaged with the teeth of the ratchets. Journaled to the ratchet-wheel 4,
by means of a threaded pin 9, is a shank 8, formed with a ratchet 13 and provided with an intermediate ball-bearing 7 and at its rear with a threaded socket 10, in which a threaded pin 11 is made to operate, the said pin being provided with a barbed head 12. Rigidly' attached to the one end of the pin 1S above v described is a pawl 17, adapted to engage' verse pin operating through a slot formed inthe rod.
In operation the ratchet-drill above described is arranged in a position and is operatedin the same manner as those now in common use, except when itis desired to feed the drill forward, which is accomplished by pressing the rod downward, thereby slightly rotating the pin 18 and engaging the pawl 17 with its ratchet 13, and by a movement of the'ha'ndle the shank is turned and fed forwardby the action of the screw 11.
Various v'slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is-
The herein-described ratchet-drill, consisting of the handle, 1,' the socket portion 2 loosely mounted therein, the two ratchetwheels 4, and 5, one on either side of the handle, the pawls 14,'and16 for engagingthe said ratchet-wheels, the threaded shank S, having a ratchet'13, the pawl'17, mounted uponthe pin'18, the said pinbeing provided with a short lever19 backed byjasuitable spring, the rod 2O arranged within the handle for operating the lever, and a means for confining the said rod in position, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN PETTERSON.
