Description

Patented Apr. 10,1917.
n. NELSON.
TOOL HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 25, I916.
ROBERT NELSON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESGTA.
TOOL-HOLDER.
Application filed February 25, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner NnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tool holders and more particularly to ratchet tool holders, and primarily adapted for use as a substitute for the usual brace and bit and screw driver, when there is insuiiicient space t warrant the use of the latter mentioned tool; and further this ratchet tool holder is adapted to hold and be used with a variety of small tools such as auger bits and the like.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a spring for retaining the dogs in engagement with the teeth of the tool socket and means for alternately causing the dogs to disengage from the ratchet whereby the head of the tool may be conveniently operated in different directions.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation;
Fig. 3 is a detail illustrating the manner of engagement and holding of the tool within its socket; and
Fig. a is a rear elevation illustrating the disengagement of one of the pawls from the ratchet and further illustrating the tension of the spring upon the other of said ratchets for retaining the latter in ratchet engaging position.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the head or handle portion of the tool which is preferably constructed of wood and of annular configuration and has its inner face provided with an annular recess 6 and also with a bore 7 for receiving a tool or the like if so desirable. A hearing plate 8 is seated within the head 5 at a point iiush with the wall or the recess 6 and is engaged by the tool socket 9, said socket being formed with an enlarged flanged ratchet head 10, and the ratchet head.
Specification of Letters Patent.

10 of the socket 9 is defined upon the hearing plate 8 and within the recess 6 through the medium of a plate 11. This plate 11 is secured to the under face of the head 5 through the medium of fasteners in the form of screws or the like and indicated by the character 12. This tool socket 9 is, of course, provided with the usual bore 13 for the reception of the shank portion 1a of an auger, bit or the like tool, and it is to be further stated that this socket is externally threaded as indicated by the character 1% for threadedly receiving an internally threaded collar 15, the purpose of said collar being to engage with the shoulder of the tool, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 30f the drawing, whereby the tool is permanently retained within the socket, and in turn to the head 5 as the occasion may so demand. A pair of pawls 16 and 17 are pivotally mounted in the recess 6 of the head 5 through the medium of the pins 18 which pass through the openings 19 of enlargement-s 20 of said pawls, and pivotally connecting the pawls to opposite sides of the tool socket 9 and for a horizontal swinging movement with respect to said head, whereby the head portions 21 and 22 of the respective pawls 16 and 17 will engage with the ratchet flange 10 of the socket. The head portions of the dogs are automatically retained in engagement with the ratchet flange 10 of the socket through the medium of a flat arched spring 23. This spring 23 is loosely seated within the recess 6 of the head and has its leaves 2% reposed in notches 25 of the enlargements 20 of said dogs. The dogs are alternately operated through the medium of an operating member 26, this member 26 embodying a fiat flexible member defined in the recess 6 of the head and lying in a horizontal plane thereto. The opposite ends of this operating member 26 are bent inwardly and upon themselves to provide the same with hooked ends 27. Riveted or otherwise secured to the medial portion of this member 26 is a button 28 which protrudes through the slot 29 formed in the retaining plate 11, whereby when the button is actuated in a direction toward the leaf the right side hooked end 27 of the member 26 will engage the tail of the dog 22 and release the head portion thereof from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet flange 10. This operation of the releasing of the dog 17 will cause the rounded portion 32 of the dog to abut against the leaf of the spring engaging the same and draw the spring in a slight horizontal direction whereby the leaf of the spring contacting with the pawl 16 will be drawn into taut engagement therewith and permanently hold the head 21 of the dog 16 in firm contact with the ratchet flange 10 of the tool socket 9. Of course, it will be understood that should a reverse direction of the tool be desired then by moving the button 28 to the right will operate the dog 16 and force a tension of the spring 23 against the dog 17. It is to be further stated that the hooked end 27 of the member 26 will frictionally engage with the tail portion of the respective dogs 16 and 1'? whereby holding the member against movement, and when assuming such position the member 26 will be forced into engagement with the pins 29 and prevent theforcing of the hooked ends 27 below the plane of the button 28 and holding the same at all times in frictional contact with the dog with which it is e11- gaged.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now con sider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such advantages may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended thereto.
I claim:
A tool holder embodying a recessed head, a tool socket member having a toothed flange, a solid retaining plate connecting the toothed flange of the socket member within the recess of the head, and provided with a slot, a pair of dogs pivotally connected in the recess of the head, a spring mounted in the recess of the head for holding the dogs in contact with the toothed flange of said tool socket member, and a bar having its opposite ends curved inwardly to provide the same with hooked terminal portions, said bar being arranged in the recess of the head for horizontal sliding movement, means connected with said operating member and protruding through the slot of the plate for causing the hooked ends of said operating member to alternately engage with the tails of the dogs and throwing one of said dogs out of contact with the teeth of the flange, and forcing the spring taut against the opposite pawl for permanently retaining the same in engagement with the teeth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
