ERNEST DWIGHT WILLIAMS, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CORKSCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,872, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed January 31, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST DWIGHT WIL- LIAMS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Corkscrew, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a novel form-of ratchet corkscrew; and it consists, essentially, of a handle provided with a socket and carrying a spring pawl, in combination with a pointed screw or worm which carries a ratchet and is formed with a squared portion just below the ratchet, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is aside View of myimproved form of corkscrew, a portion of one of the cheekpieces being removed in order to disclose the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the corkscrew, the socket through which the shank of the worm extends being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 00 x of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view taken on line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view with the corkserew'bit in section.
In constructing such a corkscrew as the one illustrated in the drawings above referred to, I provide a plate, 10, formed with a pointed projection, 11, a central aperture, 12, and a semi-cylindricalportion,13,an auxiliary plate, 26, being secured to the plate by rivets 2, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, this auxiliary plate being formed with'a semi-cylindrical portion which registers with the portion 13 of the forming a socket through which the shank 15 of the worm or screw 16 passes. 'To the upper end of the shank 15 there is secured a ratchet-wheel, 17, that is arranged to be engaged by a spring-pawl, 19, that is fixed to the plate 10. Just below the ratchet 17 the shank 15 is formed with a squared portion, 3, which is arranged to fit within a correspondinglyformed socket, 4, that is formed .in the plate 10 and the auxiliary plate that is secured to said plate 10. Cheek-pieces are held to place, as indicated in the drawings, by rivets or screws 6.
Serial No. 226,037. (No model.)
\Vith a corkscrew constructed as described the worm 16 may be advanced within the cork by imparting a rotary reciprocating motion to thehandle, the spring-pawl19 slipping over the ratchet-teeth as the handle is moved to the left and catching upon said teeth as the handle is moved to the right, the handle and the worm or screw being adjusted atthis time as indicated in Fig. 1. When, however, itis desired to remove the screw or worm from the cork, the squared portion 3 is seated within the recess 4, when, if the handle is turned to the left, the screw will turn with it and be withdrawn from the cork.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.. The combination, with the handle provided with a socket and a pawl, of the shank entering the said socket and having a ratchetwheel engaged by the pawl, and a clutch separate and independent of the pawl for positively locking thehandle and shank together, sub stantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the handle having a pawl and a socket provided with an angular portion in its inner end, of the corkscrew pr0- vided with a shank entering the socket and having rotary and longitudinal movement therein, an angular projection or portion on the inner end of the shank to engage the angularportion of the socket, and a ratchet-wheel on the inner end of the shank within the handle and engaged by the pawl, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a handle made up of a central plate having a recess, 12, and formed with a semi-cylindrical projection, 13, and cheek-pieces 25, of a plate, 26, held to the plate 10, a screw or worm, 16, the shank of which fits within the socket formed by the semi-cylindrical portions of the plates 10 and 26, a ratchet carried by the shank of said arm or screw, a squared portion, 3, formed upon the shank, and a recess formed in the upper end of the shank-holding socket, substantially as described.
