WALTER H. MORSE, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
RATCHET- WRENCH.
srncrrronriolv forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,908, dated August 14, 1906.
Application filed May 7, 1900. Serial No. 15,668. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
ie it known that I, WALTER I-I. MORSE, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of ll/Iassachusetts,l1ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in ratchet-wrenches.
The object of my invention is to produce a ratchet-wrench of simple construction and compact form.
To this end my invention consists of a Wrench having the novel features of construction which will now be fully and clearly described in connection with the accompanying drawings and which will be particularly pointed out in the claims at the close of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan of a wrench embodying my invention, the pawl being set so that it is in engagement with the ratohet wheel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section with the casing partly broken away, showing in full lines the pawl in engagement with the ratchet-wheel and showing in dotted lines the pawl out of engagement. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2 with the parts in the dotted position.
In the drawings, 1 represents a hollow case which holds the wrench-head and ratchet and the pawl and is provided with a handle 2. The ratchet-wheel 3 is formed with a hubt, which constitutes the head of the wrench and is formed with an aperture 5 of square or other polygonal shape to fit the nut. In one face of the case 1, which I call the upper face, is an opening 6 large enough to admit the ratchet-wheel 3. A flanged ring 7 fits over one end of the hub after the ratchet is inserted and is screwed to the case, the ring forming a bearing for the hub. In the opposite face or bottom of the case is a cylindrical opening 8, which forms a bearing for the other end of the hub. The sides of the ratchet fit sufficiently close between the ring and the side of the case to prevent axial movement. The case is chambered out around the periphery of the ratchet to allow free rotation when permitted by the pawl.
A pawl 9, pivoted within the case on pin 10, has two fingers 11 12, either of which may be made to engage with the ratchet. A block 13, journaled in the case, is formed with a socket 14, within which is inserted a pin 15, seated on a spring 16, and is provided with a lever 17 on the outside of the case, whereby the block 13 may beturned on its axis. The pin 15 is held against the pawl by its spring. The back of the pawl is formed with a notch 18, so that when the pin 15 is in the bottom of the notch, as shown in Fig. 2, both fingers of the pawl will be out of engagement with the ratchet, and the ratchet and hub are free to rotate in either direction. 3y turning the lever 17 in either direction the block 13 will be turned on its axis and cause the pin 15 to turn the pawl so as to bring one of its fingers into engagement with the ratchet, and thereby preventrotation of the head in but one direction, thus rendering it operative as a ratchet-wrench. Thetwo projections 19 20 serve as stops to limit the movement of the lever 17. By turning the lever 17 so as to bring the other finger of the pawl into engagement with the ratchet the action of the wrench will be reversed.
The block 13 is squared at the sides to prevent interference with the movement of the pawl.
What I claim is 1. A ratchet-wrench comprising a casing, a handle therefor, a ratchet-wheel formed with a hub which is mounted in said casing and constitutes the head of the wrench and has a polygonal hole extending axially through said hub to form the socket for the nut, a pawl pivoted within said case having two fingers either of which may at pleasure be engaged with said ratchet, a block journaled in said casing having a pin which is spring-seated in said block and engages with said pawl, and a lever connected with said block whereby it may be turned so that the said pin will cause one or the other of the said pawl-fingers to engage with the ratchet at pleasure, substantially as described.
2. A ratchet-wrench comprising a casing, a handle therefor, a ratchet-wheel formed with a cylindrical hub which is journaledl in said casing and has a polygonal hole extending axially through said hub to form a socket for a nut, said hub constituting the head of the wrench, a cylindrical opening in one face of said pawl to engage or disengage with said 10 the casing to admit the ratchet wheel, a ratchet at p1easure,substantiallyasdescribed; flanged ring which fits over the end of the hub In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigand is secured to the casing to form one of nature in presence of two Witnesses.
5 the bearings for the hub, a pawl pivoted with in said casing, a block journaled within said WALTER MORSE casing and having a spring-seated pin which Witnesses: engages with said pawl, and a lever by which ELLA E. MORSE, said block is turned so that said pinwill cause WILLIAM M. PREST.
