APPLICATION FILED MAY 9. 191a.
Patent-ed May '11, 1915.

ANTHONY CUDOSZKI, OF PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY.
WRENCH.
masses.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY CUDoszKI, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and resident of Passaic, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to socket wrenches made in sections and so mounted that a universal mounting is provided to permit of the operation of the handle and socket on different planes and afford means whereby the socket may be applied to nuts in otherwise inaccessible places, as will be more fully described in the follow ng specification set forth in the claim a l illustrated in the drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a plan view of the improved wrench with a monkey wrench used as a handle. Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3, is a horizontal sectional view -illustrating the ratchet mechanism. Fig. 4,
is a modified form of the universal joint construction.
The object of this-construction of a wrench of the character herein described is to oper ate on bolts and nuts at otherwise inaccessible points which is very often necessary in modern machinery and particularly automobiles and motor boats. Where attempts have been made to provide such a wrench,
the angular play has been limited and the ratchet movement has been so delicate as to be inoperative.
The present invention comprises a casing having in its base 10a socket for the insertion of a handle. In the drawings the end or a monkey wrench 11 is shown inserted in this socket and used as a handle, but it is obvious that any lever may be used for the purpose.
The outer end 12 of the casing is rounded and hollow to receive the ratchet hub 13 having the usual teeth and also a groove 14 to receive the end of the screw 15 to retain it in place. The upper side of the base 10 is provided vith the housing 16 to contain the pawl 17 which is forced toward the ratchet teeth by the spring 18 and retained within the housing by means of the plug 19.
A pin 20 in the end of the stem 21 and fitting in the slot 22 of this plug may be used to Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 9, 1913.
in the county of Passaic and extended lower end Patented May 11,1955. Serial NO. 766,462.
reverse the pawl to rotate the hub ferent direction.
The ratchet 13 is provided with an open ing 23 to receive the stem 24: of the' iower member or knuckle 25 of the universal-joint, which is connected with the adjacent knuckle 26 by means of the link 27 the knuckle 26 having a polygonal socket to receive the nut or bolt head to be operated on.
In case it is desirable to operate on boltheads or nuts at points difficult to reach, the number of knuckles of the universal joint is further increased as shown in Fig. 4, so that the end member 28 with the socket may be any desired distance from the handie or toward otherwise inaccessible points. The joint may be stiffened and at the same time be flexible by means of a covering 29 of coiled wire of any desired gage. The member has the usual stem 24 to fit the socket 23 of the ratchet and it is evident that permanent socket members may be inserted in the opening or wrenches of any type used.
, A wrench constructed in accordance with the above description is a strong and substantial tool capable of being used on bolts wherever used in complicated machinery.
Jaws or sockets of difierent sizes may be quickly substituted for bolts of different sizes and the whole device made to take the place of several tools now required by the average engineer or machinist.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A wrench comprising a head having a socket for a handle at one end and a circular. opening at the other end, a ratchet wheel with a socket and adapted: to be held in the opening, a housing inthe upper side of the head, a pawl and spring in the housing, means for reversing the pawl, a screw retaining the ratchet wheel in the opening, a nut engaging member carried by the ratchet wheel, and a universal joint between the engaging member. and the ratchet wheel.
Signed atNew York in the county of New York and State of New York this nineteenth day of April A. D., 1913;
ANTHONY CUDOSZKI.
