WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 0313. 12, 1920.
Applicationpled October 9, 1919, Serial No. 329,530. y
To all w zom'z' may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE D. DOUGHTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connerville, in the county of Johnston, State of Oklahoma, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in IVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,` and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and particularly to ratchet wrenches.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved wrench for use on automobiles whereby access can be gained to nuts and bolts which are otherwise n inaccessible with the ordinary wrenches.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved wrench which includes means for turning a nut or 1colt in either direction, with novel means for reversing the rotatable movements of the wrench.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, just inwardly of the left handV side of the casing, as seen in Fig. 1, for the purpose of showing one of the pawl and ratchet means.
Fior. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3*-3 of Fig. 1, to the right of the upper part of the shank of the wrench, asl
seen in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 ofF ig. 1, looking upwardly, to show the relative positions of the pawls nd ratchets, and the reversing means there- Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the shank of the l posed the plates 15 and 16, the former be- Ahas also an apertured head, and both of these heads of the plates receive the end portions of the shaft' 12 rotatably therethrough. On one end of the shaft'there is formed a socket member 19 for the reception of the shank of a socket wrench head 20, said l socket member 19 being4 provided with a screw 21 for retaining the wrench head in position therein. Disposed transversely through the shank, between the shaft'12 and the laterally turned portion 17, is a pin 22, and mounted for pivotal movement on the ends of this pin are the pawls 23 and 24, the former engaging with the teeth of the wheel 13, while the latter engages with the teeth of the wheel 14. These pawls, however, are disposed for engagement with the wheels from opposite sides, vand the teeth of the wheels extend in opposite directions, so that the shaft 12 may be rotated in opposite directions for the purpose of screwing on or off a nut. Disposed through the shank, between the pin 22 and the portion 17, is a pivot pin 25, and movably mounted on the ends of this pin, and on opposite sides of the shank are the pawlreleasing members 26 and 2 These members have their outer ends curved in opposite directions for engagement with the respective pawls 23 and 24, said members being rotatable with the pin so that when one is moved into engagement with the appropriate pawl to release the same from its ratchet wheel, the other member will be moved away from its appropriate pawl.
By this construction the wrench may be operated to turn on or off a nut with equal facility, the pawl not needed being readily and quickly released and the one needed thrown into operative position with respect to its ratchet wheel.
In the operation of the wrench it is only necessary to engage the wrench head with the nut and then move the shank back and forth, with the result that the said Vhead will be turned by the shaft, due to the action of the pawl in engagement with the proper ratchet wheel, said pawl moving idly back over the ratchet wheel when the direction of the shank is changed.
Formed in the shank, adjacent the laterally turned portion 17, is an arcuate slot 28 in which is disposedE a bolt 29, and heldy to the ends of this bolt by the nuts 30 are the adjacent ends of the releasing members' 26 and 27. This insures simultaneous move-l vment ot@ the two members.
What is claimed is; Y v
A wrench comprising a shank having a pair of longitudinal plates secured in spaced relation to one end of the shank and on opposite sides thereof, a transverse rotatable shat disposed through the plates and shank and having a socket on one end, a ratchet wheell secured on the shaitv between one of the plates and the shank, a second ratchet wheel secured on the shaft between the other plate and the shank, pawls pivotally mounted on the shank and engaging rea pair of releasing levers' mounted on the said VVpivot on Vopposite sides ot' the shank and having pawl engaging ends extending Ainl opposite directions, and a connecting means movable in the slot and connected to the levers, whereby Vupon movement oi one of the levers said lever will engage and; release the adjacent pawl and the other lever be moved away from the other pawl.
In testimony whereof, affix my signature, in the presence of twoy witnesses. v CLARENCE D. DUGHTV. ,lVitnesses R. HVAUGHTER,
M, L. SHERRELL.
