Description

Y Nov. 22, 1927.
J. V V. M DONOUGH WRENCH Filed Dec. 15; 1924 ?atented Nov. 22,1927.
UNITED ures PATENT? JOHN w. MCDONOUGI-I, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'IO II'INsDALE MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, or oHIoAGo, LLINoIs. I
WRENCH.
Application filed December 15, 1924. Serial No. 755,958. g
This invention relates to wrenches of the ratchet type and While it may of course be;
used for any suitable purposes it is particularly adapted for use on nuts. or bolts in inaccessible places as for instance on the connecting rods of the engines of certain automobiles which are so located that'it is difficult to get at them.
The objects of this invention are to pro vide an improved ratchet wrench; to, provide awrench of this character which may be cheaply made but which will be durable and convenient in operation; to provide a wrench which is adapted to be usedin more or less inaccessible places; and to provide such other novel features as will be pointed out hereinafter. j
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention; Figure 1 is a side view;
Figure 2 is a plan view; Figure 8 is a sec tlonal view taken on the line 33 of Flgure 2; and Figure 4L is an enlarged sectional view of the socket.
In the more or less common forms of ratchet wrenches, a spring-pressed pawl or dog is used for engagement with the ratchet, such pawl being actuated by the handle. I/Vhen a nut or bolt turns somewhat easily the pressure of the pawl on the ratchet is often sufiicient so that it will not release as the handle is swung to releasing position, but will merely swing the socket with the nut or bolt back and forth. In accordance with my invention I overcome such difliculty and do away with a separate viding a pawl or detent on the handle memher and mounting the handle so that the pawl will swing clear of the ratchet when the handle is swung back for a further turning movement.
As shown in the drawings, the socket 5 is made somewhat elongated for the special purposes heretofore mentioned and is provided with hexagonal recesses or engaging openings 6 at either end thereof. IVhile this form of socket is particularly adapted for use in connection with certain connecting rods, of course any suitable form may be provided for other purposes. wheel .7 is preferably formed integrally with pawl by pro- The ratchet the socket and has the usual teeth 8. The
socket 5 is rotatably mounted in side pieces or links 9 and is held'in position by means of the ratchet, which forms an abutment for engagement with the adjacent ends of the links. These links are held together and properly spaced apart by shoulderedrivets l0 and 11.
The-handle 12 is pivotally mounted on the rivet 11 and has a slot 13 for receiving the rivet 10 so that the handle may have a limited rotative or swinging movement with respect to the side or link, numbers 9. The
inner end of the handle has a pawl or detent it, which is preferably formed integrally therewith and which is adapted to engage with the teeth 8 of the ratchet 7. The arrangement is such that as the handle 12 is swung inone direction on thepivot 11, the detent will engage with the teeth, and as the handle is swung on the pivot incthe opposite direction, the detentwill swing. free from the teeth. The handleis preferably mounted so that it will have free and easy movement between the links and on the pivots, so that there will be comparatively little tendency toward rotating the socketv when the handle is swung to take a new grip or bite .on the ratchet. As the links and handle may be conveniently punched or formed from sheet metal, and as the other parts are simple in construction, it will be seen that I provide a ratchet wrench which may be made at low cost and which will be par- I ticularly efficient and durable in operation. i
Having thus described my invention,,what
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1
1. In a device of the character setforth, the combination ofa socket having an integrally formed ratchet wheel, link members engaging with the socket on either side of the ratchet wheel and having two spacing rivets at [different distances from the center of the socket, a handle pivoted on the inner rivet and having a slot for receiving the outer rivet, said handle also having a pawl for engagement with the ratchet wheel.
2. 'A ratchet wrench comprising a rotatable member provided with ratchet teeth, side plates having bearings for said rotatable member, a handle having a pivotal supportin said plates adjacent to the teeth and hav ing a pawl at the end thereof for engagement 7 5 with the teeth, said handle also having a slot which is farther from the center of the rotatable member than the pivot, and a rivet direction while permitting its movement in the other direction to allow the gage with the teeth.
