Description

Dec. 26, 1939. c. A. GRAHAM WRENCH Filed April 28, 19:58
2 Sheets-Sheet 1 1.1 ri T v (J l i Patented Dec, 26, 1939 UNITED SATE PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relatesto a wrench set or combination and it particularly aims to provide a structure having all of the necessary sockets or heads, for use in connection with dual wheels of Ford or other trucks, and for trailer wheels.
The invention resides in the novel combination of parts and details hereinafter described with relation to accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the wrench set or assembly;
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in substantially central vertical section through the set or assembly;
Figured is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line t i of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a detail section taken on the line i5 of Figure 3;
Figure 7 is an end elevation of the main tubular socket member, and
Figure 8 is a detail side elevation of the cup nut and collar nut connected together.
Referring specifically to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the invention employs an elongated tubular main socket member it whose walls are concenas in a pawl and ratchet, to turn the socket member in either direction, is pivoted at It to a bolt spanning the plates Id. In order to hold the pawl it in either position, that is with either end l'l engaged with the teeth, a detent l9 abuts the same on opposite sides of center, such detent being slidably mounted in a tube Ell fastened to the handle and urged outwardly to the desired degree of frictional contact with the pawl O by an expansive coil spring 2! housed within tube Rotatably mounted within the main socket member it is an auxiliary socket member 22, the same being removable and reversible end to end, if desired. Such auxiliary socket member has bearing flanges 23 contacting the inner wall of the main socket member Hi. At one end, auxiliary socket member 22 has a wrench head 2i and at its opposite end it has a wrench head 25. The
head 2 is provided with a square or other socket 255 in the free end thereof, aligned with the socket [2. Head 25 also has a suitable socket 227 in the free end thereof. Each of the heads 2d and 25 has an opening 28 and 29 therethrough, selectively adapted to register with openings 3% in the wall of the main socket member it. A rod may be passed through the aligned openings 28 or it and openings 30 so that the socket members iii and; 22 will rotate as a unit through operation of the handle, and in either direction, ac-
cording to the direction of rotation of the hande and position or" the pawl l6 With respect to the teeth l3.
It will be realized that the wrench may be used with any of the sockets l2, 2% and 27 engaged with a nut or other part and that the socket member 22 may be reversed end to end so that either socket 27 or 26 will be exteriorly thereof.
The invention is particularly useful as in connection With dual wheels as referred to where a collar nut 31 and a cup nut32 are removed from the wheel and applied thereto as a unit, the same being removed and applied when the hexagonal or octagonal portion of the nut 3| is engaged in the socket 52, with nut 32 outermost. After such unitary nuts have been removed, and it is desired to separate them, they may be applied in the sockets l2 and 26 as shown in the drawings. In
such position, the handle may be turned and the A rod or the like applied in the opening 29 may be turned relatively thereto, so as to thereby detach nut 32 from nut 3!.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
A tool of the class described comprising a tubular socket member adapted for turning having a socket portion in oneend thereof, a removable and reversible auxiliary socket member rotatable within the first mentioned socket member having socket portions in each end adapted selectively to abut the first mentioned socket portion and to aline therewith, the second mentioned socket portions being dissimilar, said auxiliary socket member having openings therethrough one adjacent each end, the first mentioned socket member having openings therethrough for alinement with either of the first mentioned openings, so that an element may be applied to connect the socket members for unitary rotation, said auxiliary socket member being of a length to extend beyond the first mentioned socket portion at the end opposite the socket portion to expose the adjacent opening thereof for engagement by a turning element when the socket members are operated one relative to the other to detach the unitary nuts.
