Description
WRENCH. y
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led January G, 1921. Serial No. 435,388.;`
T ali. whom t may con-cern Be it lrnown that I, VANnrvnn J. VAN HORN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'renches, of which the followingis a specification.
The invention relates to improvements wrenches, and has particular reference to ratchet wrenches.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a durable, effective wrench.
Another object is to provide a wrench of few parts, designed for cheap construction.
Another object is to provide a reversible socket wrench.
Another object is to provide a wrench, the working parts of which are housed within a single casing. y
Another object is to provide a ratchet wrench in which the operating handle serves also as a positively operable pawl to move the ratchet rotatable member.
Another object is to provide a wrenc particularly adapted for use on bolts positioned in narrow contracted areas.
Another object is to provide a ratchet wrench which is reversible by simply turning the wrench over.
Other, further and more particular objects of the invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description, when taken in conjunction with therdrawings, wherein y Fig. 1 shows a plan view of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fi 2. 4
n all the views the same reference char acters are employed to indicate similar parts.
In the drawings ,5 represents a one-piece flat housing or casing providing substantially duplicate attached parts 6 and 7 connected together through the section 8 and closed at the angularly disposed arcuate con,- tacting edges 9, the parts 6 and 7 are sulficiently separated to provide a space for the insertion of a handle 10. The `parts 6 and 7 are perforated as at 11 and 12, respectively, which perforations are in perfect register for enclosing the ratchet wheel 13 and substantially concentric with the outer arcuate end of ythe housing.` rlhe'rwheel 13 l i' `iS provided with lateral hubs 1A and 15,
which substantially'fit` the openings 11 and 12'a1i'd with intervening ratchet teeth. 16L` The wheel also has an angular opening 17 Patented aug# is, ieee..
extending through the hubs fo-r engaging a .soclret nut, bolt or the like.
A rivet 18 holds the members 6 and 7 together afterl the wheel 13 and the handle 10 have been placedl therein. pivoted by ya rivet 19 which passes through the members 6 and 7. lThe end of the handle is cut away in an oblique plane 2O and provides a toe 21 that engages the teeth 16 of the wheel 13. The handle also has a notch 23 which holds the toe 21 normally in contact with thewheel.
lLook-at Fig. 2 and assume that there is member in the vopening 17 to be turned by thewrench: pushing on the handle lO'until it is brought intol dotted line position, the handle and housing are moved in that direc-y tion, whilethe .wheel 18 remains stationary.
The spring 22 is overcome by the effect of pressure exerted upon the handle so that the toe 21 of the handleclears the teeth 17, as clearly shown rin dotted lines as at 24. New, when the handle is brought back to `full line position the wheel' 13 willhave the wheel in contact with the surfaces bounding the openings 7'and 12. Thethin flat construction and rounded ratchet end of the wrench adapts it especially for use on bolts positioned `in narrow contracted portionsl of a structure which are inaccessible to the ordinary wrench. i
The handle is y 22 in which is inserted an open spiral spring y The hubs 14 and 15 of the wheel are laterally beyond.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench having a one-piece housing provided with flat, perforated, folded hous-V ing members, keach having bounding walls angularly related to vthe flat members and placed edge to edge; a ratchet Wheel having lateral shoulders, smaller in diameter than the teeth of the Wheel, one on each side thereof journaled in the respective open ings; handle, pivoted in said housing, having a toe engaging said teeth and a notch in its edge, near the toe and an open coiled spring in said notch, having one end in contact with the handle and the other in 'contact with the side Wall of the housing.
2. A Wrench comprising a hat housing raving one end rounded and having registering side openings, said side openings being near the rounded end and substantially concentric therewith; a ratchet Wheel mounted in the housing with its huhs ournalled in 'the openings, said Wheel having an angular opening extending longitudinally through the hub; a .handle pivoted 'in the housing and having a pawl shaped end engaging the teeth oi the ratchet Wheel;
landv a spring mounted in the housing that yieldingly holds the pawl shaped end oi' the handle in conact with the ratchet Wheel.
l'n testimony whereof l hereunto subscribe my naine.
VANDVER J. VAN le-URN.
