JOHN Z. NEWMAN, OF PENNINGTON GAP, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO SAMUEL P. JAYNES, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-INDICATOR.
` SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 677,884, dated July 9, 1901.
Application tiled September 1, 1900. Serial No. 28,783. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN Z. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pennington Gap, in the county of Lee and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Door-Indicator, of which' the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in oiice-indicators; and the object is to provide a simple and improved indicator to be attached to the door of the office for the purpose of informing persons visiting the office whether the occupant is in or out, and if out the time of leaving the office and the number of hours to be absent therefrom or the day of return, the indicator being so constructed as to be easily setto supply the desired information and having means for locking it in position displaying that information.
W'ith the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claim, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section showing the main indicating-disk; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the auxiliary or calendar disk; Fig. Li,a transverse section showing the thumblatch for the main indicating-disk, and Fig. 5 a sectional detail view of the month-plates and crank-shaft therefor.
My invention consists of a casing, which may be of any desired shape, but preferably square, said casing consisting of an inner plate A,having flanges B, which constitute the sides and ends of the casing, and a removable outer plate C, having an opening D, with a smaller opening E in its lower edge, said openings being covered by a plate F, of transparent material. The'casing is secured to the door by the four bolts G. Extending transversely through the casing, at the center thereof, is a Spindle H, formed with a squared portion I within the casing and having its ends projecting beyond the front and rear plates of the casing and receiving knobs J. Fitted upon the squared portion of the spindle within the casing is a largev indicatingdisk K, having printed thereon In the office.
Come in. Following this information the words Out at 6 a. n1., but will be back at 7 a. In, and in the spaces following this the same information is printed, with the exception of the hours, which are changed, the last space containing lthe wordsfOut, but will be back on day shown on calendar below.7 This disk is rotated to bring the desired information before the opening in the outer plate. Secured to the disk, at the center thereof, is a disk L, notched about its periphery. A latch M is pivotally mounted and has on its end a projection which is normally forced into said notches by a spring N and a thumbpiece O, projecting to the exterior of the outer plate of the casing.
P designates a sliding locking-bolt which is adapted to be operated by a key inserted through a key-*Opening Q in the front wall of the casing. This bolt is adapted to engage the latch on the opposite side of its pivotal point from that of the projection and to hold it in the notches.
To set the main indicating-disk, the thumblatch is disengaged from the notched disk and said indicating-disk rotated by means of the knob. Mounted below the opening in the outer plate of the casing and between said plate and the main indicating disk is a smallerindicating-diskR,havingaboutitssur face the numerals l to 3l, indicating the days of the month, said numerals appearing before the smaller opening in the front plate of the casing when the disk is rotated. Said disk is provided with an operating-handle S on the outer side of the casing and with a notched disk T, similar to the disk of the main indicating-disk, and with a spring-held thumblatch U, also similar to the thumb-latch before described.
V designates a plurality of plates having printed thereon the names of the months, said plates being pivotally mounted in the. casing adjacent to the opening D by a pin W passing therethrough adjacent to their outer ends. The outer ends of these plates are reduced to form handle portions V', which project through the side of the casing to be engaged by the hand of the user for the purpose of raising the inner ends of the plates to cause the name of the desired month to ap'- pear before a small opening formed at the lower end of opening D.
X designates a crank-shaft mounted transversely of the casing and having a handle portion X' on the outer side of the indicator, said shaft being turned beneath the desired mouth-plate to hold the same raised..
From the above description it will be seen that I have produced a very simple construction of office-indicator which may be quickly set to give the desired information and which may be locked in its adjusted position.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is
In an office-indicator, the combination, with a casing having an opening formed therein, of a plurality of intermediately-pivoted plates having their outer ends projecting from the casing, and containing adjacent to their opposite ends information to be displayed before said opening, and a crank-shaft extending to the exterior of the casing and adapted to be turned beneath any one of said plates to hold the same raised with the information displayed, substantially as described.
